Microsoft makes it harder to choose the default browser in Windows 11
Miscellaneous / / August 19, 2021
As long as you use the standard Edge.
Microsoft contributes a lot of positive changes into the Windows 11 user interface, making it easier and more user-friendly, but in some areas the new OS is only getting more complex. A prime example is the default browser selection scheme, which will become only more confusing.
As in Windows 10, when you install a new browser and open a web link for the first time, a prompt will appear on the screen allowing you to select a program and remember it. And this will be the only way to easily change the default Edge browser to Chrome, Mozilla, Opera or Vivaldi. If you do not immediately check the box next to "always use this application", then there will be no second such opportunity. We'll have to go into the settings, which will become noticeably more complicated.
In Windows 11 settings, Microsoft has changed the way that apps are assigned by default. Now, instead of a single switch, you have to set values for different types of files or links separately. In the case of Chrome, the browser will have to be manually selected for HTM, HTML, PDF, SHTML, SVG, WEBP, XHT, XHTML, FTP, HTTP and HTTPS.
Competitors have already spoken about this.
With each new version of Windows, it becomes more difficult to change the default settings. They [Microsoft] understand that this is the only way to get people to use their browser.

And that's not the only problem that browsers face in Windows 11. For example, the default app selection is ignored when searching in Windows 10, and the taskbar widgets do not take into account the browser selected in the settings at all.
The developers of other browsers hope that all these changes will not survive until the final build of the system, which should be released in early 2022.
