Overview
The book "The brain: a brief guide" to the name: a little more than 200 printed pages with illustrations. The text is written in the scientific and popular sub-genres. Medical and biological facts presented so elementary that will be understood by even the man, far away from these areas of knowledge.
The brain - a densely interwoven network of 86 billion "wires" neurons to more 86 billion supporting cells. It consists of approximately 85% fat, and weighs about 1.5 kg.
The narrative begins with a small shallow excursion into the physiology of the brain. The authors then viewed through the prism of the brain some spheres of modern life, namely:
- creation;
- technologies;
- stress;
- sport;
- food;
- health.
Inside the brain no pain receptors, so neurosurgeons can pierce it without causing the patient pain.
Physical activity, nutrition and sleep are essential for the brain. Training to improve his blood circulation and neuroplasticity. From food it depends largely on development of important hormones, and from sleep - working memory.
When we sleep, the brain cells are compressed to allow cerebrospinal fluid to seep into the slits between them and wash off the products of metabolism that accumulate daily.
We considered in detail the impact of technology on the brain. Do they make us smarter or, on the contrary, forced to degrade? Chapter of the book, you will learn that "dreadful and terrible," stress is actually our friend. The problems arise when it becomes chronic. The book also tells, than fraught heart attacks and strokes and how to protect the mind from age-related dementia.
aftertaste
My personal assessment of the book Jack Lewis and Adrian Webster - 6 of 10.
Recently, the topic of the brain more and more interesting to me. It was one of the reasons to read this work. Overall I was pleased but confused three things:
- "Wow! Great! What a curious fact! What to do something? "- these thoughts more than once visited me at the time of reading. The book explains the phenomenon, but there is almost no direct recommendations. Rare tips are presented in such a mild form that does not prompt for action.
- 95% of the information provided, I earlier in one form or another read on Layfhakere. :) Seriously, about flow, Naps, influence Sahara and unsaturated fats in the body regularly tell our blog authors. Therefore, the book has deepened, but have not updated my knowledge.
- No narrative unity. In my opinion, the authors failed to become true collaborators when the unified view is presented by a narrator. Feeling that Lewis and Webster shared responsibilities: I am writing about physiology, and you become attached to it and self-development productivity.
Up to one liter of blood flows through the brain every minute. If your brain was a vessel for drinking, he and would have more than half a liter of liquid.
Nevertheless, I recommend the book to the reading for those who want to know more about your body, to make more rational decisions, develop the ability to handle stress and increase productivity.
"The brain: a brief guide. All you need to know to improve efficiency and reduce the stress, "Jack Lewis, Adrian Webster
