REVIEW: 'Psychology. People, Concepts, Experiments, "Paul Kleinman
Books / / December 19, 2019
Many would like to become a psychologist. Mainly due to the fact that this profession allows you to get into your head and understand other people. "Psychology" Paul Kleinman this can not be taught, but it is the only book that will understand the basics of psychology and may continue to study science further.
I recently finished reading the book "Aristotle for all", a review of it can be found here. Perhaps this is the first book in my life, which is more like a sammari. It seemed difficult to contain key information about the whole science in one book, however in Mortimer Adler's got it.
"Psychology" - this is the second such book, and to her I was not skeptical. I heard the name of its author, read some reviews (positive) and adjust to the fascinating and useful reading.
Paul Kleinman
Paul Kleinman - blogger, writer, screenwriter and popular books on philosophy, psychology and more. Interested in TV sketch show, sitcom. He was born and lives in New York. In 2009 he graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in the field of "Art" and "Art of communication: radio, television and film industry", and and Film and Television (FAMU) at the Prague Academy of Performing Arts - one of the most famous film schools in the world, founded in Prague in 1947 year. He worked at MTV, National Geographic Channel, A & E Television, Adams Media, Viacom.
In the book, we see immediately that Kleinman - blogger. Each chapter takes no more than two pages, everything is clearly structured, and I was never bored: once you start to nod off boring threads, it immediately ends.
In the book a lot, not only information, but also amusing facts about which people who do not specialize in psychology, is hardly known before.
Confrontation of Sigmund Freud, and Karen Horney
If psychology was a reward for misogyny, it would certainly have received the Sigmund Freud. According to his theory of psychosexual development of girls between the ages of three to six years - the phallic phase - with their fathers are based on penis envy.
Of course, Horney (and many others) did not agree with this theory. However, rather than to refute it, Karen brought another theory, which by and large does not stand any particular criticism.
On phallic stage supposedly takes place a phenomenon that Horney calls the envy of the uterus. It suggests that men are envious of women's ability to bear children.
At the beginning of the XX century theory Horney has been rejected by society, but later it contributed to the development of the idea of gender equality.
Seven plus or minus two
Another memorable to me chapter was devoted to cognitive psychologist George Miller. In 1956 he published a paper "The Magical Number Seven, Plus or Minus Two: the ability of the border to the processing of information", which still remains relevant.
In it Miller expressed the idea that short-term human memory can store only seven pieces of information, plus or minus two. In order to remember more elements, they must be combined into blocks of five to nine pieces each. For example, it is hard to remember the number 198719052345. But if you combine the numbers in blocks, is the following:
1987 19 05 23 45.
Thus the numbers associated with the date and time, and memorize them a lot easier.
conclusion
Despite the fact that all involved Kleinman and gradually, in the "Psychology" he was able to gather all the information needed untrained person. Experiments Pavlov, Freud's theory, the Stanford experiment, personality disorders - all this in the book is given, though a bit of space, but this is enough.
It is unlikely that you can gain for themselves something new, if you are already familiar with psychology. However, if you need well written encyclopedia, or if you want to plunge into the world of psychology, but it is not clear where to start, "Psychology" Kleinman - this is what you need.
"Psychology", Paul Kleinman
