Vulnerability found in Qualcomm processors
Miscellaneous / / May 07, 2021
It affects almost a third of existing smartphones.
Check Point Research Cyber Security Specialists discovered Critical vulnerability in mobile station modems (MSM) of Qualcomm chips. These modems are responsible for voice and SMS and are used in devices from Google, Samsung, LG, Xiaomi, OnePlus and other manufacturers. Recent report showedthat about 31% of all smartphones in the world are powered by processors of different Snapdragon series, so a huge number of devices are potentially affected.
Using this vulnerability, attackers can hide malware in the modem, making it invisible to the smartphone's security system. This will allow them to view SMS messages and call logs, and listen to conversations.
Qualcomm already released a patch that covers this vulnerability, but it may take time for different manufacturers to distribute it, and it is not yet clear which devices have already been updated and which are still at risk. Check Point Research recommends that you always install security updates.
