Kazan Federal University (KFU) was created by decree of Emperor Alexander I on November 5, 1804 and is one of the oldest higher educational institutions in the Russian Federation. World famous chemical, mathematical, orientalist, linguistic schools, as well as archaeological, historical and ethnographic, medical, neuropathological-psychiatric, medical, geological, geobotanical, natural history, legal, pedagogical schools and scientific society. KFU is the site of the only discovery of a chemical element in pre-Soviet Russia. Vladimir Lenin, Maxim Gorky, Leo Tolstoy studied there at different times. The university is included in the State Code of Especially Valuable Objects of Cultural Heritage of the Peoples of the Russian Federation. Today KFU is one of ten Russian federal universities, one of the oldest and the second (after Moscow) university in Russia. KFU is a participant in the 5-100 project (Project to increase the competitiveness of leading Russian universities among the world's leading scientific and educational centers).
