Google announced when ad blockers will be disabled in Chrome
Miscellaneous / / November 22, 2023
Some adblock extensions will continue to work, but not all.
Still in mid-2022 became knownthat Google is preparing to stop supporting extensions to the Manifest V2 standard and completely switch to V3. This change should improve user security, but there is a problem: due to the new API, many adblock services will stop working with the release of this update.
Manifest V2 support was originally planned to be disabled for users in January 2023 beta builds of Chrome and Canary will begin to be disabled for users of the stable version in the summer and will be completely finished by 2024. Late update moved For undefined period. Now David Lee, director of product at Chrome, toldthat all versions of the browser, except stable ones, will move to Manifest V3 in June 2024. We're talking about Chrome 127 build for developer channels, beta testers and Canary users.
The test period will last at least a month, after which the update will be rolled out to the stable version of the browser - that is, no earlier than July 2024. From this moment on, all Manifest V2 extensions will be automatically disabled for users, and downloading such extensions from the Chrome online store will also become unavailable.
Considering that this problem has been known about for almost a year and a half, ad blocker developers are actively working on new workarounds. For example, the creators of uBlock Origin launched uBlock Origin Lite, which complies with Manifest V3 and uses the new API. It is assumed that it will continue to work even with Chrome 127, but it will not be possible to verify this for sure until the browser itself is updated.
