Fraudsters have a new scheme: money to a “special account”, cash refund and SMS from the Central Bank
Miscellaneous / / October 13, 2023
At the Central Bank told about a new scheme to deceive Russians, in which the attackers promise to return money in cash. With its help, they have already received tens of millions of rubles.
It works like this: the potential victim is informed about an attempt by unknown persons to steal funds from the account. To prevent this, attackers recommend transferring them to a “safe” account with the Central Bank - only while searching for criminals. The money can then supposedly be taken back to the bank reception in Moscow. At the same time, they warn that for disclosing information from the investigation, a person will face criminal liability.
Then the frightened client makes an appointment with the Bank of Russia and even sends a message to his phone confirming the appointment. Moreover, the SMS comes from the Central Bank short number (300).
This allows criminals to gain trust and convince the interlocutor to make a transfer.

The regulator noted that such an SMS is received only if the client himself made an appointment through the website or by calling the contact center. Otherwise it should be ignored. And “special accounts” do not exist at all. All the money from them goes to scammers.
