Mars Express reveals giant Night Labyrinth on Mars
Miscellaneous / / October 13, 2023
The landscape is surprisingly similar to that on earth.
European Space Agency (ESA) published incredible video of the Labyrinth of Night on Mars. The video was made from numerous photographs sent by the Mars Express interplanetary station.
We are talking about a gigantic complex of intersecting canyons that stretches for 1,200 kilometers. For comparison: approximately the length of the Apennine Peninsula, on which Italy is located.
The video clearly demonstrates various features of the Martian landscape. For example, you can see grabens in it - recesses formed as a result of subsidence of sections of the crust. This, astronomers believe, happened back in the days when there were active volcanoes on Mars. The labyrinth is located just next to the Tharsis region, which includes several of the largest volcanoes in the solar system.
The intersecting canyons and valleys are up to 30 kilometers wide and up to 6 kilometers deep. In many places traces of giant landslides are visible. Some slopes have large dune fields created by Martian winds.
Mars Express has been exploring Mars since 2003. Thanks to it, ESA receives images of the planet's surface and studies its atmosphere.
