WhatsApp will stop working on millions of Android smartphones on October 24
Miscellaneous / / September 26, 2023
WhatsApp usually continues to work on older versions of the OS even after the developers themselves have stopped supporting them long ago. But the list of compatible devices is still updated periodically. So, from October 24 WhatsApp will stop Android support from version 4.1 to 4.4.4.
After this, the list of supported devices will look like this:
- Android 5.0 and later;
- iOS 12 and later;
- KaiOS 2.5.0.
Nothing changes for iOS and KaiOS; only owners of old Android smartphones should think about upgrading. Really old devices like the Nexus 7, Sony Xperia Z, Samsung Galaxy S2 and Note 2 will lose support.
By data As of July 2023, 0.51% of Android devices in the world still run on firmware below Android 5. This sounds modestāunless you consider that there are approximately 3.6 billion. It turns out that we are talking about 18 million devices running Android 4.4.4 and below.
Before ending support for systems, WhatsApp will send notifications to affected users and remind them several times to update.
