James Cameron on the dangers of AI: "I warned you back in 1984, but you didn't listen"
Miscellaneous / / July 20, 2023
About the prophetic "Terminator", the race of AI technologies and the replacement of scriptwriters with neural networks.
In the new interview for CTV News director James Cameron were asked to share their thoughts on the development and potential dangers of artificial intelligence. Previously, the idea to slow down and start controlling the development of AI has already expressed representatives of many companies and research laboratories.
Cameron noted that he fully shares these concerns, and mentioned that similar thoughts were expressed in his "Terminator": "I warned you back in 1984, but you did not listen."
The director thinks it's important to evaluate who develops technology and whether they do it for profit (by developing greed) or for protection (by developing paranoia).
I think the biggest danger is trying to weaponize AI. I believe that we will fall into an analogue of the nuclear arms race, but with AI. And if we do not create it, others will surely create it, and the situation will only worsen.
Just imagine AI in a war scene where computers are in charge, making decisions at a speed that humans can't compete with, losing the ability to de-escalate conflict.

As for his professional life, Cameron does not believe that AI can replace screenwriters now or in the near future. Because in screenwriting, the main thing is not who created the story, but whether the story is good.
Personally, I don't believe that a disembodied mind can pick up what living people have said about the life they have. was about love, lies, fear and mortality - and then processed into a word salad that will touch audience.

Cameron noted that he himself is not exactly interested in using AI to write his scripts. The impact of technology on the industry only time will tell.
Let's wait 20 years - and if AI wins the Oscar for Best Screenplay, I think we'll have to reckon with it.
