Lost city and hundreds of Bronze Age artifacts found in northern China
Miscellaneous / / July 01, 2023
Thanks to this discovery, scientists have finally solved a mystery that has existed since the 1940s.
Chinese archaeologists discovered the ruins of the lost city at the excavation site of Zhaigou in the northern part of Shaanxi province (China). Previously, in this area, people regularly found mysterious artifacts, the origin of which scientists could not explain.
The Bronze Age settlement is spread over 11 hills and covers an area of more than 3 square kilometers. Many features of its structure indicate that it was a major connecting center, maybe even the capital.
The relics from the excavation site are over 3,000 years old. This means that they were made during the Shang Dynasty, which ruled from about 1554 to 1046 BC. Among the numerous artifacts found were bronze drinking vessels, painted pottery, turquoise-inlaid jewelry, several horse-drawn chariots and much more - more than 200 items in total.
Various relics from the 1940s were also found by the inhabitants of the province. Before that, scientists could not understand where they come from, but now they have an answer - these are household items of the townspeople of the ancient city.
In the past, we have also discovered several tombs and large-scale structures in the area. This time we were more fortunate and we opened a full settlement.

We are talking about nine tombs in Zhaigou, which were excavated in 2022. Seven of them are with aisles. This indicates that they belonged to local chiefs.
The passages in the tombs symbolize the high social status of the people buried in them.
