Five options for screens that protect against insects, poplar fluff and dust.
What you need to know about mosquito nets
What are mosquito nets
By design, there are frameless meshes and with a frame on a rigid frame. Most often they are stationary and do not require quick removal. There are also opening options for screens with a swing mechanism on hinges, retractable pleated nets that fold like an accordion, and even more complex roll models.
For self-manufacturing, stationary frameless or frame meshes are best suited. They are quite simple to assemble from improvised or purchased materials.
Which mesh fabric is better
The most preferred are special materials for mosquito nets, which are made of fiberglass with a resistant to ultraviolet PVC coated. Due to this, the canvas does not collapse in the sun and performs its functions for a long time.
Conventional fiberglass cellular sheets, which were widely used in the Soviet era, will become more dusty and sag and are unlikely to last more than one season. However, due to the low price, they can be changed every year.
There are also polyester meshes, which are closer in composition to fabrics. They are softer, thinner, come in different colors. However, they also stretch and sag from the wind, but are relatively inexpensive.
Where to get the canvas
Finding the grid itself is not difficult. Construction stores sell canvases with different cell sizes per footage, as well as ready-made curtain kits with everything you need. You can contact companies that install windows and buy a mesh from them. In the case of temporary protection for a fast hand, for example, dacha, you can look for something like an old curtain or tulle.
What to make a frame
If you want to make the mesh more durable and strong, you will need a frame. In factory screens, it is assembled from aluminum profile, which has sufficient rigidity, is not afraid of temperature changes and sunlight. In homemade, it will also be the best option. You can find such a special profile for grids in hardware stores.
A plastic cable channel for wiring is also often used as a frame material. You can take a frame from an old screen with a torn mesh, if you already had one, and replace only the canvas.
How to attach a mosquito net to a window
It is enough to press simple frameless nets with a standard seal or stick it on a Velcro tape (Velcro) from the side of the room. A variation of such fixation are magnetic strips, one part of which is glued to the window frame from the inside, and the second - along the contour of the canvas, which allows you to quickly take off and put the mosquito back.
Frame nets can be installed using brackets on the frame outside the window or cling with brackets directly into its opening. In private houses, sometimes the screen is glued with a good double-sided tape from the side of the street.
How to make a frameless mosquito net with fastening from the inside with your own hands
The easiest option and, surprisingly, not the worst. It will take, in fact, only the mesh itself, preferably thin and soft, which must be fixed in the groove for the seal. Moreover, both the removed seal and improvised means are suitable for fixing. For example, twine, silicone-coated clothesline, electric wire, dropper tube or matches wrapped around tape to the desired diameter.
This option is not suitable for windows with a soldered, non-removable rubber band.
What you need
- Mesh cloth;
- scissors or a sharp knife;
- roulette;
- screwdriver is optional.
How to do
Locate the joint of the seal and pull on one of the ends to pull the elastic out of the groove.
Continue to pull gently, pulling out the entire seal along the contour of the frame. If the elastic is not solid, pry and pull out each of the pieces separately.
Measure the distance between the side grooves and between the top and bottom. Add 2-3 cm of allowance on each side and cut off the necessary piece of fabric with a sharp knife.
Attach the mesh to the frame from the inside and insert the seal on top. It is better to start from the middle of the upper side, so that later you do not hold the canvas with your hands.
Tighten the mesh slightly and start inserting the elastic from the bottom corner of one of the sides, moving up. If you can’t push the seal with your hands, help yourself with something like a screwdriver or the blunt side of scissors.
Using the same principle, insert the seal from the bottom and remaining side.
Finish the installation at the top of the opening. If you overdo it with stretching the gum, then at the end a slight surplus may form. It will have to be cut and inserted in a separate piece when you remove the mosquito net. Or try to re-thread the elastic without stretching it.
Use scissors or a sharp knife to cut off the excess mesh along the contour. Be careful not to damage the seal.
How to make a frameless mosquito net on a Velcro tape with your own hands
Like the previous version, this mosquito is placed from the inside. The difference is that not a sealant is used for fastening, but Velcro tape on a self-adhesive. It is advisable to take the mesh itself soft, polyester, for better attachment to the "thorns" of Velcro.
What you need
- Mesh cloth;
- Velcro tapes on a self-adhesive basis;
- scissors or a sharp knife;
- wet and dry wipes;
- roulette.
How to do
Use a damp cloth to clean the surface of the frame around the seal from dust and dirt. After that, wipe everything dry with a paper towel.
Peel off the protective layer from the Velcro tape and carefully stick it on the frame just behind the sealing rubber. Cut off the excess in place or immediately measure the desired length.
Glue the Velcro on the other sides of the frame in the same way and press them firmly with your hands for a secure fit.
Attach the canvas to the Velcro with indents of 2 cm from the edge, so that later the mesh can be easily removed, for example for washing. First, fix it from above so that it does not fall, then from one of the sides.
With a little stretch, attach the mesh to the side, and then to the bottom.
With scissors or a sharp knife, cut off the excess fabric, remembering to leave an allowance of 2 cm. Smooth out the edges of the mesh around the perimeter to make sure it is secure.
How to make a mosquito net on an old frame with your own hands
If you already have a frame screen with a torn canvas, then it is not necessary to order a new one - just replace the mesh with a whole one.
What you need
- Mesh cloth;
- screwdriver;
- old frame;
- sharp knife.
How to do
Use a screwdriver to pry off the edge of the rubber band that holds the mesh in the groove of the frame. Carefully pull out the seal so as not to tear it, it will still come in handy.
Pull out the plastic handles and remove the grid. If necessary, clean the frame while you can.
Lay the canvas over the frame, lining up with the outer edge. Start threading the sealant harness into place along one side. Press the elastic first with your hand and then with a wide screwdriver, scissors handle or other object without sharp edges, so as not to damage the material.
Move consistently around the perimeter of the frame. It is not worth pulling the mesh specially - it will straighten itself when the elastic band completely sits in place.
Don't forget to install handles. Lay them on top of the mesh, turning them with their ears inside the frame, and press them on top with an elastic band, putting it into the groove.
If the tourniquet stretches when laying and does not fit into the groove, just cut off the excess piece.
Carefully remove the excess fabric along the contour of the seal with a sharp knife, and the mosquito net will be ready.
How to make a mosquito net from a plastic cable channel with your own hands
Fairly easy to assemble and budget version of the grid with a secure fastening of the web and a decent look. But there are also disadvantages: weak structural rigidity and vulnerability to UV rays. However, for small windows on the shady side or on the lower floors, such mosquitoes are quite suitable.
What you need
- Mesh cloth;
- cable channel 20 × 10 mm with or without self-adhesive backing;
- good double-sided tape - optional;
- cyanoacrylate glue;
- saw with a small tooth;
- sharp knife;
- pencil;
- roulette;
- square;
- masking tape;
- sanding paper - optional;
- joiner's square and clamps - optional;
- wet wipes;
- dry rag.
How to do
Wrap the ends of the conduit with masking tape to prevent movement. Then, using a square, draw a line at a 45° angle.
Saw off the part along the marked line, trying to keep the saw blade perpendicular to the element. Remove burrs with a knife or sandpaper.
Measure the required length from the protruding edge, mark a line at 45 ° with a square, and then saw off the part with a hacksaw and remove the burrs.
In order not to get confused in which direction to cut off the edges, be guided by the illustration. Measure dimensions from the protruding edges, and direct the bevels to the center of the part.
Try the planks together and label the pairs at the corners on masking tape, marking 1-1, 2-2, and so on.
Cut the tape and open the lids of the boxes.
Bring together the corner pieces of the frame and ask assistant keep them in that position. If you have a carpenter's square and clamps, attach the parts to the table for convenience.
Use scrap triangles or cut new ones as reinforcing pieces when gluing. Apply glue to the junction of each of the corners of the frame and attach the element, pressing it well and holding it for a while. If desired, instead of pieces of plastic, you can take metal mounting corners.
If the height of the frame is more than 1 m, and the width is more than 0.4 m, then add a transverse part in the middle of the long side for strength. Cut through the walls of the side planks and connect the elements with glue, putting a piece of plastic on top for rigidity.
Lay the mesh over the frame and press it against the frame, alternately putting on and snapping the covers of the cable channels.
With a sharp knife, cut off the excess fabric around the perimeter of the frame.
clear the window from dust with a damp cloth, wipe dry. Then stick the mosquito net, removing the protective film from the adhesive layer. You can also use double-sided tape for installation or special mounting brackets for mosquito nets, which are sold in hardware stores.
How to make a screen from a profile for mosquito nets with your own hands
The most correct and durable option, which will still be much more accessiblethan ordering a factory model from window manufacturers. In this case, there will be no differences - you will buy the same parts and simply assemble the screen yourself. Everything you need can be found in hardware stores as a ready-made set for one window, or separately in the form of a profile, mesh and fittings.
What you need
- Mesh cloth;
- frame profiles;
- transverse profile;
- connecting corners;
- sealant;
- brackets;
- pens;
- self-tapping screws;
- sharp knife;
- hacksaw for metal;
- screwdriver;
- roulette;
- pencil.
How to do
Measure the height and width of the light opening (from elastic band to elastic band) and write them down. Then compute the dimensions of the vertical and transverse strips of the frame, taking into account the width of the connecting corners. To do this, subtract from the height of the opening the dimensions of the upper and lower corners, and for the width - the dimensions of the side corners. In ready-made kits, they immediately indicate how many millimeters should be subtracted from the width and height of the opening in order to get the correct frame.
According to the figures obtained, measure the details on the profile blanks and, using a hacksaw, saw off the vertical and then the horizontal planks of the frame. With a sharp knife, remove the burrs from all saw cuts.
Insert the connectors at the corners and assemble the frame.

If the frame height is more than 1,000 mm and the width is more than 400 mm, then an additional bar from a transverse profile will be required for rigidity. Cut it along the inner width of the frame, and then insert the brackets into the ends and install the part in the frame, positioning it in the middle.
Spread the mesh over the frame. Start fastening it from the corner, inserting the rubber band into the profile groove, first with your hands, and then with a fairly thin but blunt object like a handle knife.
Slightly stretching the mesh, insert the seal along the contour of the frame. Approximately in the middle of the height of the frame, install the handles by turning them with their ears inside the frame, and then also pressing them with a tourniquet.
After stretching, cut off the excess elastic and mesh along the contour of the seal.
Attach the short brackets to the side posts of the frame with self-tapping screws close to the elastic band and with the hooks down.
Fasten the upper brackets in the same way: in width - close to the frame, and in height - so that between the "shelves" (middle parts of the attachment) of the upper and lower hooks there was a distance equal to the height of the light opening.
Install the mosquito net in place. Holding the handles, put it out of the window, then move it towards you, hooking the upper hooks, and lower it down so that the lower brackets are already attached to the frame.
