An image created by a neural network won a prestigious photo contest

The author refused the prize and explained why he deceived the jury.
Neural network image DALL-Ewon in the Creative category of the prestigious Sony World Photography Awards, which honor original and experimental photography. The jury of the award did not notice the catch and were sure that they were evaluating the work of a person.
The image generated by the neural network was sent to the competition by German photographer Boris Eldagsen. Immediately after the announcement of the results, he admitted that the image was not real, and refused the $5,000 reward.
According to the man, he deliberately deceived the organizers of the competition in order to draw attention to the question of the future of photography in the context of the rapid development of AI. What happened proves that such a problem already exists, he notes.
The rules of the competition in the category "Creative" do not prohibit processing images using a neural network. However, it is impossible to use fully generated pictures, the organizers of the award noted. By the way, the contestant called the photo "a joint creation of man and AI."
