Origami for kids: 10 figures that everyone can handle
Miscellaneous / / April 09, 2023
Each craft will take no more than five minutes.
Folding paper figures develops fine motor skills, trains accuracy and attentiveness, which is useful for children of any age.
Moreover, by coloring the resulting animals and birds, the child can show creativity. And then use ready-made characters for story games.
To make it more convenient, we have distributed all the figures according to the principle “from simple to complex”. Even preschoolers can fold the first origami on their own, and adult assistance may be required to create the latter.
1. Rabbit
You will need a square sheet with a side length of about 20 cm.
1. Fold the sheet in half diagonally. Then straighten and repeat the same on the other side.
2. Fold the sheet in half along one of the fold lines and lay the resulting triangle with an angle up. Step back from the base about 4-5 cm and bend the sheet in a straight line again.
3. Take one edge of the resulting shape and fold it as shown in the video. Repeat the same on the other side.
4. Fold in a small corner at the bottom. This will be the chin of the rabbit. Turn the figurine over, bend the top corner and tuck it in. The rabbit is ready.
5. Glue a pink paper nose and ears and doll eyes onto the figurine - or just draw them. And don't forget your teeth.
The rabbit is ready.
2. Whale
For this figurine, you will also need a square sheet of paper of any size. You can take a color one, as in the video, or make a whale out of white material, and then paint it.
1. Fold the sheet in half diagonally.
2. Bend one side of the square to the center crease. Then do the same on the other side.
3. Bend the bottom half in half at an angle to the center.
4. Fold the resulting figure in half.
5. Fold the sharp corner up. Then open the figurine, lift the tail up again and fold it so that its two halves are on either side of the main part.
6. Glue on the toy eye, draw in the teeth, and the whale is ready.
3. Fox
For this figurine you will need a square sheet of paper with a side length of about 20 cm.
1. Fold the sheet diagonally.
2. Fold the resulting triangle in half, and then open it again.
3. Bend the side parts to the center line and fold the resulting rhombus in half.
4. Find the corner with three free ends - this will be the head of the fox. Turn the figurine over so that it is pointing up. Then step back from the right angle about 1.5–2 cm and bend the paper.
5. Open the fold and lower the central corner - this will be the muzzle of the fox.
6. Bend the corner on the left - this will be the tail of the fox.
It remains to make a nose and eyes - they can be drawn or taken from ready-made kits for creativity.
4. Heart
To create this figurine, you will also need a square sheet of any color.
1. Fold the sheet in half diagonally. Repeat the same on the other side.
2. Take one corner and fold it towards the center.
3. Bend the opposite corner so that it touches the center of the top fold.
4. Bend one part of the figure as shown in the video.
5. Repeat the same on the other side.
6. Flip the figure over and fold over the top two corners.
7. Fold in the corners on the sides.
The figurine is ready!
5. Cat
For this figure, you will need two square sheets with a side length of 10 cm. You can take colored paper or make a cat out of white paper and then color it in.
1. Fold one square in half diagonally on one side and then the other side.
2. Fold one corner towards the center, and then fold the entire side to the middle.
3. Flip the figurine. Fold in a small corner at the bottom. Then bend the top of this corner.
4. Turn the figure over again. Bend one corner side to the center. Do the same on the other side.
5. Fold up the cat's ears. Make sure that the triangles are the same, and their bases are at an angle.
6. Turn the figurine over and bend the corner sticking out under the ears so that the cat has a flat head.
7. Take the second sheet. Fold it in half diagonally. Then fold the two sides towards the center, as if you were going to make an airplane. Fold the resulting figure in half.
7. Bend the sharp corner of the triangle to a blunt one, and then turn the corner up. This will be the cat's tail.
It remains to connect the head and body, glue or draw eyes, and the cat is ready.
6. Goose
Take a square sheet of paper with a side length of about 20 cm.
1. Fold the sheet in half diagonally and turn the square upside down.
2. Fold one side of the square towards the center, and then repeat the same on the other side, as if you were going to make an airplane.
3. Bend the sharp corner down to the base of the resulting triangle, and then bend its corner up.
4. Turn the resulting shape over and bend it in half.
5. Straighten one of the folds, making the neck.
6. Straighten the upper triangle, making the head.
Draw an eye and a beak, and the bird is ready.
7. Rybka
Take a square piece of paper with a side about 15-20 cm long.
1. Fold the sheet in half diagonally, and then do the same on the other side.
2. Open the square and fold it in half. Unfold the shape again and repeat the action so that you get a rectangle.
3. Fold the rectangle in half to make a square. Put your hand in the top pocket and fold it over to form a triangle. Turn the figure over to the other side.
4. Re-insert your hand into the top pocket and make a triangle.
5. Take one corner of the top triangle and fold it as shown in the video below. Press harder with your hand or a ruler to make a good fold. Then fold this new triangle with the top side towards the center and carefully iron the paper.
6. Unfold the triangle and find the first fold from the center. Fold the bottom triangle up to this line.
7. Bend the top triangle and turn the figurine over.
Draw eyes on the figurine, and the fish is ready.
8. Butterfly
For this craft, you will need a square sheet of any color.
1. Fold the sheet in half diagonally. Repeat the same on the other side.
2. Fold the square in half, joining the top and bottom. Unfold the sheet and do the same on the other side.
3. Using the fold lines as a guide, fold the sheet so that two triangles are on the inside and two are on the outside.
4. Fold the triangle in half. Find a corner with four free ends and cut them in a semicircle.
5. Open the triangle again and place it angle down. Fold one side over as shown in the video, then do the same on the other.
6. Turn the figure over to the other side, take the bottom corner and bend it up so that the edge sticks out from above.
7. Bend the protruding corner and press it harder. Then slightly bend the figure in the middle so that it becomes voluminous.
Butterfly is ready.
8. Dog
Prepare a square sheet of paper with a side of about 20 cm - choose the color to your liking. You will also need glue to make this origami.
1. Fold the paper in half diagonally, unfold it, and then align the other two corners.
2. Fold the bottom corner towards the center
3. In the same way, bend all the other corners, making an envelope.
4. Bend the left triangle, fold it as shown in the video, and wrap it back. Then fold the right corner of the envelope and make a fold approximately in the middle of the triangle - so that a small corner protrudes beyond the borders of the square.
5. Bend the figure in half and fold the protruding corner to the left side.
6. Straighten the upper triangle - a rectangle is located above it. Take a ruler and lay it diagonally - from the lower left corner of the figure to the upper right. Make an even fold along this line.
7. Turn the figure over to the other side and do the same. Straighten the triangle and make a fold in the middle of the rectangle.
8. Straighten the corner between the two halves of the figurine, making the dog's head.
9. Glue the triangles next to the head and glue the sides.
It remains to draw the eyes and nose of the figurine, and the dog is ready.
10. Airplane
For this figure, you will need a rectangular sheet of paper - colored or white.
1. Fold the sheet in half, open and turn over.
2. Bend the two corners of the rectangle towards the center.
3. Bend the resulting corner down so that about 3 cm remains between it and the edge of the sheet.
4. Turn the figurine over and fold a strip about 1 cm wide on top.
5. Turn the figure over again and bend the two corners towards the center.
6. Fold the remaining corner up to secure the two halves.
7. Fold the plane in half.
8. At the base of the corner there is a curved strip about 1 cm wide. Step back from it about the same amount and imagine a line from this point to a small corner that holds the two halves of the plane.
Make a fold along this line. Then turn the figure over and do the same on the other side.
9. Bend the tips of the wings so that their fold line is parallel to the top of the aircraft.
The plane is ready - it remains to check it in action.
