Interior trends 2023. What you need to know about home design and how to put these ideas into practice
Miscellaneous / / April 06, 2023
Comfortable and not like everyone else. We have collected seven approaches to the design of housing, which will be actively used this year.
How trends appear in the interior
It may seem that “interior fashion” is an oxymoron. People are ready to regularly supplement their wardrobe in accordance with trends, but with repairs it is more and more difficult. It is made for a long time: few people will change their apartment every year after the release of new trends and anti-trends in interior design magazines. But still, there is a fashion for the design of space: we can easily distinguish an apartment from the 1970s from a home from the 2010s. New finishing materials, furniture and appliances appear, one style is replaced by another.
Several factors influence the formation of trends in interior design.
- Industry exhibitions. For example, ISaloni (Milan), Maison&Objet (Paris), IMM Cologne (Cologne), Stockholm Furniture&Light Fair (Stockholm). On them you can see the advanced ideas of design, layout, furniture and lighting. The goods presented here one way or another in a few years appear in a simplified form in mass market building stores or on AliExpress.
- Fashion industry. The most stable color combinations migrate from wardrobe to home decor. For example, in 2022 the Valentino brand introduced pink collection, which was developed in collaboration with the Pantone Color Institute. And the news about the filming of the film "Barbie" and the popularity of the images of Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling in memes for a short time made the style "barbicore”, which is based entirely on pink. This year, interior design magazine editors called natural pink is the most promising color for decorating and suggest using him even in the bathroom.
- Global processes in culture and society. Most interior magazines cite sustainability, sustainability and individualism as the dominant ideas of the 2020s. Therefore, in the long-term fashion there will be interiors made of high-quality natural materials, which also reflect the personality of the owner. The experience of the pandemic also influenced the trends. During lockdowns, people spent much more time at home, so they sought to transform the space around them. As a result, the apartments became more comfortable and multifunctional.
- The prevalence of practices. This is how antitrends are formed. Any hackneyed approach to interior design gets boring, so sooner or later it goes into the shadows. This can be seen in the style loft. The aesthetic, which was inspired by industrial spaces turned into living spaces, has become commonplace after 15 years of active use in typical small apartments. Therefore, for many years in a row in the lists of anti-trends can be found imitation of bare brick in the interior.
What ideas will be trending in 2023
1. Warm minimalism
Neutral interiors are unlikely to go out of style. Firstly, they can be created without the help of a designer, and secondly, in such a room it is easy to change accents with the help of decor. However, cold black-and-white-gray interiors go away into the past. It is not always comfortable to live in such places and it is difficult to maintain order. In addition, any foreign objects against such a background will create visual noise. Gray was the dominant color of the 2010s, but designers feel that its time has passed. For example, the American online store of decor and interior items 1stDibs interrogated 880 designers about color fashion trends. Light gray took the last place. Only 5% of those polled voted for him.
Instead come minimalistic interiors made in warmer colors. For example, shades of ivory, light wood, beige or sand can be used as the base color. Elle Decor Magazine connects changing tastes with the difficult emotional state of people after the pandemic and with gloomy expectations for the future. In such an atmosphere, you want to make the house comfortable, warm and safe.
2. Lots of color...
Experts agree that concern for the environmental situation dictates the fashion for natural shades - the colors of stones, minerals, earth and wood. They can be both neutral and saturated - for example, you can be guided by the colors of spices. But designers offer to be even bolder. “We are leaving the calm skies of neutral tones and entering the rainbow.” speaks designer Dean Pallavi about this trend.
It is difficult to single out one fashionable color. shades are welcome green, red (designer Daniel Kolding especially notes the hue of bovine blood) and orange. The matter is not limited to colored furniture: rich colors are also suitable for decoration - for example, in Vogue advise make a bright blue bedroom. Also, designers recommend adding colors to the design of the kitchen or bathroom - rooms that are most often done in neutral colors. Therefore, if you have long dreamed of a red bathroom, then the time has come.
3. …and ornaments
With ornaments, the same story as with flowers: you can do everything at once. For example, Vogue editors offer decorate the whole room with one ornament, when the pattern of the wallpaper is repeated on the upholstery of the sofa and pillows, and the authors of House Beautiful - mix patterns to create a more dynamic vibe in the space.
“Choose stripes, checkers and florals in one tone for an eclectic vibe. This is one of my favorite tips as playing with different patterns opens up whole new creative possibilities and gives you the chance to make a space truly yours.” speaks about this trend designer Jay Jeffers.
There is no one “most fashionable” ornament either. Both floral and geometric motifs are relevant. Although the experts notethat in 2023 will be especially common wallpaper with contrasting thin vertical stripes and checkered black and white floor tiles. But when working with patterns without a designer, there is a risk of overloading the interior, so you can start experimenting with textiles, carpets, pillows and bright accessories.
4. natural textures
Another trend that reveals the idea of sustainability. It has already entered into wide use: this is noticeable in the popularity of white marble-effect porcelain stoneware, which even hits into antitrends. But you can do without it, for example, find materials with a pattern of quartz, onyx or dark marble, use wood on the floor, walls and ceiling, install shells from textured stone or even buy accent cardboard lamps or bedside metal table.
5. Tactility
This means that the interior is good not only in appearance, but also in touch. Tactility is a continuation of the trend for naturalness. Designers propose to exaggerate this idea and use deliberately aggressive textures of raw stone.
If you are not yet ready for a full-wall stone panel, you can use simpler options. Add linen, wool and cotton textiles to the interior - textured curtains, pillows or blankets. Also designers note the growing popularity of rough boucle sofa upholstery, and instead of standard tiles, it is advised to choose hand-molded tiles. This solution is not a budget one, but you can use it as an accent - for example, lay out a low kitchen apron with unusual tiles.
6. Individuality
Interior design publications do not set strict prohibitions (only the basic gray color is unlucky) and welcome fantasy and eclecticism in every project. All this is the result of a general individualistic trend in culture. It manifests itself both in the narcissistic love of modern people for social networks, and, for example, in respect for minorities and the assertion of the idea of the value and exclusivity of each person. Therefore, a good interior should reflect the personality of the owner of the home.
Now in the lists of trends it is difficult to find unambiguous recommendations in the spirit of “this year, style is in fashion. scandi». Because of this, impeccable and sterile interiors, made according to all the canons of one style, are gradually becoming a thing of the past.
“The most memorable spaces are those that, although inspired by trends, boldly convey a person’s unique style,” speaks designer Shay Holland.
This can be achieved without repair. Fill your home with personal accessories, art and posters, photos and items no one else has. Or try to add a touch of yourself to the furniture from the mass market.
7. Historicity
Historicity is another form of the trend towards individuality. “A good interior tells the story of the owner, not the hypermarket, which cares about your wallet, not the walls,” notes designer Shay Holland. In addition, this is how the new generation shows a love for vintage things and a desire to see more value in the objects around. Therefore, in modern interiors, more and more furniture appears, bought in an antique store or inherited from grandparents. Chairs, carpets, sideboards, dishes, tables - they do not need to be thrown away, even if they are several decades old. Many items can restore on one's own.
And in this way the trend towards stability is expressed. In premium homes, it manifests itself in expensive engineering work that saves resources and minimizes harm to nature. In more budget repairs, this trend is noticeable in the use of old things and the purchase of new ones only when necessary. Moreover, it is worth choosing such goods that will definitely serve you for a long time, and will not end up in a landfill in a year.
