Kindness, spirituality, and bravery are not included in the list of favorable ones - rather, they negatively affect well-being.
Can a person's character help to live more happy life? The answer is positive. According to the new research, personality type directly affects the quality of life.
Scientists from Cambridge analyzed the data of 60,000 respondents from 159 countries and found that the more positive aspects of a person's character, the less he has a predisposition to disease. Positive for health were enthusiasm, curiosity, self-regulation or the ability to self-control, optimism, honesty, perseverance, prudence and compassion. People with all these qualities had a more fulfilling and happier life.
Enthusiasm turned out to be the most favorable character trait. In essence, it is vitality, vivacity, energy and the desire to take an active part in all aspects of one's life, says study author Dorota Veziak-Bialowolska.
Her team found that enthusiasm reduces the possibility of development
depression. And energy reduces the risk of developing diabetes and the overall likelihood of death. Optimism turned out to be one of the strongest character traits associated with well-being and good health. But an excellent sense of humor, which is also usually attributed to positive character traits, negatively affects well-being, as it interferes with good rest and sleep. Also, pranksters don't work well as a team. Courage, creative thinking, a sense of justice, prudence, a love of learning, leadership and spirituality also did not justify themselves. Rather, they negatively affect the quality of life.
In addition, the authors of the study note that kindness is a wonderful character trait, but it can lead to exhaustion and compassion fatigue. That is, in theory, it also negatively affects health.
