Russia plans to launch a domestic eSIM activation platform

The Ministry of Digital Development and the FSB are preparing retaliatory measures in case Western vendors block the loading of virtual SIM cards into smartphones - eSIM. About it write "News".

Now the departments are discussing the introduction of the domestic eSIM platform. On the territory of the Radio Research Institute (NIIR), it is planned to deploy a pilot zone with a Russian software and hardware complex, to which operators will be able to connect. This will test the necessary infrastructure.

A pilot zone is being created to select the optimal variant of the architecture and composition of the elements of the domestic ecosystem. We are talking about software and hardware systems, a national root certification center and a system for cryptographic protection of information.

Domestic equipment will be tested on the same platform. Either our eSIM chips or foreign ones that meet the required information security specification can be built into it, NIIR noted.

One of the functions of such a system is the loading of operator profiles into smartphones. For this, foreign software is now used, certificates for which developers can revoke. In this case, it will be impossible to connect eSIM in Russia. The Russian ecosystem will solve this problem.

The functionality and terms of deployment of the domestic eSIM platform have not yet been specified by the Ministry of Digital Development.
