In the new articleThe Impostor Phenomenon Revisited: Examining the Relationship between Workplace Impostor Thoughts and Interpersonal Effectiveness at Work The Academy of Management Journal presents a new look at the impostor syndrome. According to the author Basima Tevfik, Associate Professor of the Department of Labor and Organizational Studies at the School MIT Sloan management, this phenomenon has a very unexpected benefit.
Imposter Syndrome - a phenomenon in which a person does not believe in his own abilities, recognized by others, and writes off his achievements as coincidences or banal luck.
Basima writes that people who experience impostor syndrome in the workplace become more oriented toward their co-workers. And as they become involved in communication and collaboration, their effectiveness in interpersonal communication is rated as much higher.
In other words, people with impostor syndrome may often try to make up for their alleged incompetence, perceived as a disadvantage, working hard to become a good team player with strong social skills.
And it pays off: across jobs and across industries, Tevfik has found that executives are constantly evaluating employees with impostor syndrome as better at working with colleagues and the public without negatively impacting them performance.
As an example, Basima led doctors. Those with impostor syndrome were more empathetic with their patients. They listened better and extracted information well, used more open gestures and nodded more, which instilled confidence in those who asked for help.
With all this, Basima makes it clear that these results do not mean that impostor syndrome is a good thing. After all, many people who feel a sense of their own incompetence often work alone, without the opportunity to communicate with the team. And in such situations, this syndrome can become a real problem for personal growth and development.
