The resistance of the material for it is higher than that of steel and Kevlar.
Experts from Flinders University in Adelaide created material that will protect surfers and divers from marine predators. Shark Stop intends to launch the sale of wetsuits made of such material by the end of 2022. Project presented on Kickstarter.
The new material includes high molecular weight polyethylene. Even if a shark bites a person, he can only get fractures from the pressure of the jaws on the bone, but will not bleed.
The prototype of the costume was tested on a special machine equipped with artificial shark teeth. The developers found that in such tests, the new material is 15 times stronger than steel, and also surpasses Kevlar in this characteristic.
Then the material was tested in real conditions. The shark chewed on the fabric, but did not bite through it.
The Shark Stop company said that such wetsuits would sell well “even at a price of 615 euros” (53,115 rubles). Now experts are working on reducing the weight of finished products so that divers and surfers feel comfortable in them.
