How to increase the speed of downloading files in browsers
News Technologies / / December 28, 2020
When you download really large files in Chrome or another browser, you may notice how long the process is. Suppose you set to download the Windows 10 ISO file from the official Microsoft website, and the speed hovers around 600 Kb / s, although you have 50 Mb / s internet. In such a situation, you should not call your provider and accuse him of cutting down the speed.
The fact is that most modern browsers - Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and so on - download files in one stream without using your entire feed. This is completely invisible when you download small pictures or applications, but try to download 4 GB like that.
Fortunately, there are several ways to increase your download speed.
1. Chrome, Opera and Yandex. Browser"
Chrome has a Parallel downloading option in hidden settings. Turn it on, and the browser will start downloading files in several streams.
Enter in the address bar chrome: // flags / # enable-parallel-downloading
, switch the appeared setting to the mode Enabled and restart your browser. Then check the speed.
A similar option is available in other Chrome-based web browsers such as Opera and Yandex. Browser ".
2. Firefox
In Firefox, you need the Multithreaded Download Manager extension. Install it, then click on the icon in the toolbar, click the plus sign and add the URLs you want to download.
The maximum number of threads is 6. To enlarge it, enter in the address bar about: config
, then type in the search network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-server
and specify another number in the parameter instead of 6.
In point network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-proxy
do the same. It is not recommended to abuse and expose more than 16 threads.

Download managers in browsers also constantly experience problems downloading very large files. The alternative is to use a specialized program.
One of the options is uGet. It is a free open source download manager. It can both intercept links from browsers and download files on demand.
The number of streams is configured in the uGet boot parameters. To do this, when adding an upload, specify the required number of threads in the Max Connections item.
uGet works on Windows, Linux and Android.
Download uGet →
If you prefer macOS, get Progressive Downloader, a free alternative to uGet. Click Progressive Downloader → Settings → Task and enter the required number of streams.
Download Progressive Downloader →
Heavy files should now download much faster.
