As we make choices when we do not like all the options
A Life / / December 19, 2019
If the choice situation we do not like none of the options, we often do not give preference to the best of them, and the least unpleasant. The difference seems to be insignificant, but it only seems so.
You might think that it's just two sides of the same coin, but in fact between these actions there is a fundamental difference. This is manifested, for example, in the election. voters often vote for the candidate who seems to them the least unpleasant of the represented, instead of choosing the person to whom they are really sympathetic. When we have to choose the lesser of two evils, and changing the way we make decisions.
Choose or refuse
If we have included so-called failure mode, we focus our attention on the negative qualities of each option and look for the one that they are fewer.
In selection mode, we, on the contrary, appreciate all the possible solutions in a positive way, and choose the one that seems most apt. In other words, our relation to the options available for changing and what we actually choose. It is changing the very essence of the chosen.
The consequences of failure mode
Scientists have figured out how we define the degree of satisfaction with the decision. If it was based on negative criteria, our satisfaction depends on whether we think about what to choose, or about what to reject. Remembering about the shortcomings of the option chosen, we will most likely upset. If we think about the disadvantages of the options that are discarded, then we feel relieved, because our final choice was not so bad.
Change your approach to decision making
However, I would like to remind you that this way of thinking - the lesser of two evils - usually included only situations where people are forced to give up a few options, instead of looking for one optimal. In other conditions, including at work, we are much easier to control the process decision making.
If possible, try to consciously choose one or the other option rather than just give up unsuccessful. We often change our decisions, sometimes even unintentionally. Try and change your approach to decision making. This can greatly affect not only the way you make your choice, but also for your morale after it.
