Why Android - a more interesting platform for startups than iOS

John Watkinson - CEO service Larva Labs - explained why his team decided to launch a new AppChat app only on Android, iOS leaving aside ...
A month ago, we felt exhausted because the main project. So we decided to make an unusual break. We began to create a new application to see what happens and how the audience will perceive.
It was decided to release the app is only for Android and call it AppChat. In AppChat you can create chat rooms for any application installed on your smartphone. In the chat there are other users, and you can talk to them about any matter relating to this application.
There were several reasons why we chose Android as the only platform for the project:
- The user can swipe in any application in order to see AppChat panel. On iOS, this can not be done.
- When a user makes a screenshot, AppChat detects this and offers to send it directly to the desired chat.
- Our goal was to create a project for one week. Create MVP (the first version of the product) for a week and then another week to wait for approval from the App Store seemed madness. With Google Play, our application has appeared in a couple of hours after download.
We started on Friday, and next Thursday the application was already in Google Play. On XDA forum has been created subject, but the community does not react to it. We did not have any downloads.
But a few days later it began the first download, which then turned into a stream. We accidentally discovered that AppChat got its own topic on Reddit. All this gave us 70,000 messages in the first week and seven thousand people who sent six thousand screenshots. During this week we have several times a day, update applications, repairing critical bugs and coping with stress.
We can say that the project was a success. In fact, we have received feedback, which showed that the project is worth it to work on it.
Working with web projects can instantly realize the idea and see the feedback. In the mobile segment, it is harder to do, especially on iOS.
Wait a week or even longer, until your application is approved in the App Store, - a big obstacle. In addition, the idea that "violate" Apple usual calm is likely to be rejected. We are sure that even if we manage to implement AppChat idea for iOS app, it would still be rejected by the moderators App Store. Another problem is that we were not able to finalize the application at the same speed with which we have done for Android.
Publication of applications on Android - it's faster and more open way of collecting feedbacks. It's not perfect, but with his help we were able to MVP, get feedback and improve the app instantly, following the ideas of users. And our seemingly silly idea turned into a successful and a new product.
