Experts from AdaptiveMobile Security found SIM-cards in a serious vulnerability. Hacker to send a person SMS, to keep track of its location and access to its data.
An unnamed developer of spyware, which cooperates with governmental agencies around the world, uses the vulnerability more than two years. The attack, dubbed Simjacker, is primarily intended to spy on people, but can also be used for fraud, theft and other misconduct.
Vulnerability works through a special browser S @ T Browser, which is part of the standard set of applications on the SIM-card. Through operators offer customers additional services - news, voice mail and so on.
Hacker enough to take a cheap GSM-modem is and send an SMS with a special code to the victim. Phone will report directly to the SIM-card without even checking it, and the code will be executed in the browser. The user does not know about it.
S @ T Browser is already obsolete, but still used by operators in at least 30 countries. The total number of potential victims exceeds a billion.
Experts spoke about the vulnerability of the "Association of GSM» and SIMalliance - the main organizations that seek to improve the safety of mobile services. They have already passed the operator's instructions to fix the problem.
