It so happens that you open the book and think, "Why am I not met her before, when I was younger? Maybe it would have chosen another profession, or try a new hobby... "This book is just out of this category.
Thomas Armstrong (Thomas Armstrong)
Ph.D., author of 15 books, teacher. He has published numerous articles about family, parenting and relationships between parents and children. Speaking on radio and television, conducts its own program of the BBC.
What is the theory of multiple intelligences?
theory multiple Intelligences suggested by Dr. Howard Gardner (Howard Gardner). It is opposed to the traditional idea that the degree of development of human intelligence can be measured by IQ-test. Dr. Gardner believes that such an approach is irrational, because there are plenty of examples of how a person with a developed intellect, shows modest results in test time.
Among these people there are businessmen, researchers, representatives of creative professions.
In his theory of multiple intelligences Dr. Gardner identified eight (in some cases - nine) categories:
- Linguistic intelligence;
- musical intelligence;
- Logical-mathematical intelligence;
- spatial intelligence;
- bodily-kinesthetic intelligence;
- interpersonal intelligence;
- personal intelligence;
- naturalist intelligence.
As the ninth kind of intelligence Gardner offers a "conventional wisdom", or philosophical intellect.
In the book, "You can more than you think" the reader to represent each type of intelligence. Author Thomas Armstrong spent 25 years studying the works of Dr. Gardner. Has written several books for adult readers, Armstrong decided this time to appeal to a younger audience.
Thomas Armstrong described one kind of intelligence alone, answer a simple question: what is it, what is useful, how to recognize this kind of intelligence in themselves and how to develop their abilities.
An important part of each section - practical advice. For example, the author explains what kind of work most suitable person with a particular type of intelligence.
In addition, the author gives a simple and clear advice on the development of their abilities and, more importantly, to address specific problems. For example, if the linguistic intelligence in humans is not well developed, Armstrong tells where to find the inspiration for self-development, how to overcome difficulties public Speaking or writing text.
Why this book?
The main idea of the book - to break the preconceived idea that there is a concept "it is not mine." This phrase often uttered not only adults but also children, prematurely giving up a lot of opportunities.
The author deliberately uses the belief of many that some of the talent available to them. If reading the thoughts of the one who picked up the book, he immediately offers practical ways to change the perception of your abilities.
Emphasis is placed on the fact that each type of intelligence - this is another way to be smarter.
So, this is not an ephemeral talent or skill meaningless, this is a real opportunity to get a profession about which you dream, or stand out from the rest.
Of course, this book can serve as an excellent catalyst for the young reader who is at a crossroads and not sure in their own abilities. It's probably too late to give into the hands of a man who is about to choose university and future profession. But if it will open a schoolboy who is just starting to think about "what he wants to be when she grows up," that he learned a lot about myself.
At the same time, Armstrong offers the reader does not stop there, because the charm of multiple intelligences theory lies in its limitlessness.
Thomas ArmstrongAccording to the theory of multiple intelligences, there may be other types of intelligence - they just still has not classified. This means that you have left even more ways to be smarter than you think! I will list just some of the alleged "other" kinds of intelligence: creativity, intelligence, humor, cooking, olfactory, "intelligence mechanics", intuitive, psychic, technical.
Of the minuses can be called the book a few weak arguments presented in some sections. For example, the author voiced quite relevant for the modern teenager question: what to do if did not want to read the book, but the text seems incredibly boring. As a solution to this problem, Armstrong proposes the following:
Thomas Armstrong... Think about how cool that you can still do it! These icons on paper, these sounds, you are saying - are not they wonderful?
In my opinion, this argument is unlikely to work on those children who are struggling to keep itself open book. For the rest, the author manages to find good advice, ideas and lessons for those who want to develop a yet undisclosed talents.
My personal assessment of the book - 9 out of 10.
