On Amazon Prime went one of the most anticipated new series - Detective fantasy "Carnival Row". The project has attracted a lot of attention: the main roles were invited Orlando Bloom and Cara Cara Delevingne. Trailers looked very intriguing, promising nuarny detective in a dark fantasy setting. In addition, the studio announced that the series renewed for a second season even before the first exit, so the creators are confident of success.
The action takes place in the town of Burg Victorian era. In the past, its rulers became involved in a war with an enemy state in the territory of the fairies. After losing in Bourg flooded representatives of unusual races - refugees fleeing from the invaders.
The plot revolves around a police inspector Rycroft Filostreyt (Orlando Bloom). Once he was in the war, where he met a fairy Vinett Stounmoss (Cara Delevingne). Fate brings them together again as early as the burg, but the facts do not add up in the best way: in the city there is a supernatural killer.
The authors managed to interesting mix fantasy, detective, drama and even a political thriller.
But in the end, we can say after all eight episodes that "Carnival Row" was far from ideal. World of fairies, fauns and other unusual creatures are registered surface, some moments and storylines too tight, while others, on the contrary, only outlined.
And yet the show is worth seeing. Primarily due to play the central actors and great dramatic line that resembles the classic novels.
Mediocre for big-budget fantasy ...
After the final "The game of thrones"All are looking forward to new projects of fantasy: in the near future will come" The Witcher "from Netflix and the" His Dark Materials "by the BBC and HBO, and more are expected to" Lord of the Rings, "" The Dark Tower "and more. In this respect a little Amazon Prime outscored their rivals.
But those who would like first of all to see is fantasy worlds, "Carnival Row" may disappoint. Past fairies, fauns and other fantastic races paid very little attention.
Viewers simply offer to accept the idea that there is some area, populated by fairies, who are fighting for the two states. Their origin, life and many other subtleties behind the scenes.
More worse things to other races - they do not know almost nothing. Separately dismantled a story Agros - first faun, who decided to break into the upper echelons of society and settled in a prestigious area. And the background flashed a cult, who decided to overthrow the government. Werewolves also generally appear in a particular episode, just to explain one of the twists.
At first, it might even seem that the project is based on some kind of a complete book, and some of the lines just do not fit in the first season. In fact, the opposite is true: one of the creators of the series Travis Beacham zero at the beginning wrote the screenplay for the film, but decided to implement it until now. And, apparently, under the multi-format we have added various details, but superficially.
... But it is good for the social drama
However, the "Carnival Row", it seems, and does not aim to immerse the viewer is in the fantasy world. Here unusual races rather look allegory. And it is quite logical that the series has appeared just now, in the midst of the political debate on refugees.
Moreover, the plot can be interpreted in two ways. On the one hand, clearly visible allegory to the events of the past: the colonial wars, transportation black as slaves, racial segregation in society. On the other, the show can be found and a reflection of the present day: to escape from the battles of other races living in the ghetto, they despised the locals, and in the area of crime is rampant.
Sometimes the authors of the "Carnival Row" talk about it too much in a straight line, turning the words of the characters in the poster slogans. But saves it is unrealistic happening. The more that the writers will not give up in wit. That there is a scene where the dark-skinned members of the aristocracy to talk about human superiority over the fairies and fauns.
More interesting idea mongrels filed - half-human, half-fae. They feel alienated from both worlds and are forced to hide their secret to function normally in society.
But in the end raised the main theme, which is fully applies not only to the fantasy, but also to our ordinary life: the most important thing to take himself and understand his past.
Predictably for this detective ...
Component of the story of the series is divided into four lines already. One of the minor talks about communication already mentioned the Faun Agros with its new neighbors - a brother and sister of high birth, but on the brink of ruin.
Also part of the time dedicated to the family of Chancellor Brikspira Absalom, his son's abduction and political intrigue.
Basically the two are directly related with the main characters. Bloom's character tries to sort out its relations with Vinett and parallel investigates the brutal murder taking place in the Burg.
In addition to the first, all the storylines are good detective component. And here the author is interesting on the brink of logic and predictability. It seems to be built on the principles of the classical detective story: every phrase, action and a hint after a certain time are important and allow to collect from scattered pieces of whole image.
But sometimes roll in such moments are quite obvious: practically every second twist can be predicted. And to some of the mysteries of the Filostreyta fed for so long, that the intrigue turns to boredom.
But the political thriller, which give enough time, looks really unexpected. And even more unpredictable all the storylines eventually communicate with each other. Therefore, the latest episodes are not even spoil the abundance of too much "soap" scenes, there is nothing to be surprised.
... But perfect for the classic novel
Yet the most important advantage of the series "Carnival Row" can be seen at once. After all, in fact, under the cover of fantasy and detective hidden story, much like the novel "Howards End" and other classic stories.
If you disassemble the parts of the action, you can find all the main components of love during the war, which ended in a tragic parting, the proximity of the representatives of different classes, the upper classes of intrigue, infidelity and betrayal of the most loved ones.
Everything that readers loved so much in the XIX century and the first half of the XX century, migrated to the screens. But the idea remained the same.
So you want everything just worry about the relationship of the main characters and believe that sincere feelings can overcome racial prejudice. And then a little too drawn by an overlap does not seem so critical - a genre quite so permits. And so the future of the central characters and intriguing at all. The authors do not believe in vain to continue the outdoor finale makes wait for the second season.
"Carnival Row" can be criticized for non-ideal schedule - too spoiled audience HBO and Netflix expensive projects. To him priderutsya because too tearful moments and unreasonably prolonged affair.
But all it wants to do only when viewing the first couple of series or after the season. Because thanks to the game Orlando Bloom, star "Chernobyl"Jared Harris and other great actors of the characters seem alive and moving.
Plot twists and turns are interesting precisely because of the disclosure of the characters in difficult situations, and some plot twists make glad the script level. And so the "Carnival Row" is just good drama for eight hours with elements of the detective and fantasy.
