The course is devoted to the consideration of topics related to the structure of the geographical envelope and the corresponding professional areas of the specialty “geography”; categories, goals and objectives of specially protected natural areas (SPNA); the history of infographics - the development of thematic maps, statistical graphics, methods of visualizing qualitative and quantitative data. One of the topics of the discipline is devoted to a review of the experience of using infographics as part of educational and tourism activities in specially protected areas in Russia and foreign countries. Separately, issues related to the most common approaches to creating infographics, its typing, distinctive features, algorithms for selecting data and creating infographic product with the aim of popularizing scientific research in the field of geography, preserving natural heritage and developing educational and tourism activities in the territory SPNA. The goal of the course is to develop students’ understanding of infographics as one of the modern trends in data visualization, and its practical application, in areas related not only to issues of design and media communication, but to natural sciences knowledge.

Topic 1 “Geography in the life of society.” Structure of the geographical shell. Structure of professional specializations in the field of geographical science. Areas of application of professional competencies, incl. to explain natural phenomena that occur in a variety of natural settings.
Topic 2 “Specially protected natural areas (SPNA).”
Definition, goals and objectives of protected areas. Categories of protected areas according to the classifications of UNESCO, the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources, the legislation of the Russian Federation. Protection regimes of protected areas, the nature and possibilities of conducting research, educational, tourism or other activities in the territory of protected areas.
Topic 3 “History of infographics. Geographic Maps.Statistical infographics, timelines, signs, other types of visualization of qualitative and quantitative data.”
The history of the development of thematic mapping. History of the development of statistical infographics. History of visualization of qualitative and quantitative data (timelines, signs, diagrams, illustrations, etc.).
Topic 4 “Infographics: approaches to creation, typing, features.”
The most common approaches to creating infographics are exploratory and explanatory. Types of infographics: statistical, informational, chronological, event, comparative, geographical, etc. Typing of infographics: by the nature of visualization, principles of completeness of information display, presentation technology, etc. The main distinctive features of infographics in the field of data presentation and media communication.
Topic 5 “Infographics of geographical topics in protected areas: Russian and foreign experience of use.”
Infographics of physical and geographical topics. Russian experience in using infographics in the field of research, educational and tourism activities in protected areas. Foreign experience in using infographics in the field of research, educational and tourism activities in protected areas.
Topic 6 “Algorithms for creating and posting informational, popular science and educational infographics for the purpose of developing protected areas.”
Basic algorithms for choosing the purpose of infographics (popular science, tourism, educational) and ways to provide infographic materials to the user. Basic algorithms for selecting information for building infographics. Selection of location and comprehensive assessment of infographic placement points directly on the territory of protected areas.
