Drawing - free course from 4brain, training 30 days, Date: December 4, 2023.
Miscellaneous / / December 06, 2023
If you have long dreamed of learning to draw on your own, but did not dare, if you considered it something difficult, something for the especially gifted, we believe that our course will help you change this belief.
Carl Purcell ("Your Artist's Brain"), explaining that drawing is actually not difficult, compares this the process of taking a test, all the answers to which are already on the board, because the object that we are going to draw is already in front of us. All we can do is copy, that is, “copy the answers from the board.” In this course we will learn to see and “cheat.”
We admire the works of recognized artists. It seems to us that they were endowed with a special talent, genius. Indeed, there are many geniuses with brilliant visual memory who can accurately draw in detail what they saw only once. There are also those who create their own unique reality on canvas from their imagination.
However, among the recognized artists there are many who have achieved excellent results through hard work, dedication and perseverance. And certainly all of them were beginners learning the basics of drawing from scratch. So we can safely say: if you want, you can learn anything, you just need to want it. And if you are reading these lines, it means that you already have a desire to learn to draw. This is half the battle done, all that remains is to learn a new skill.
What is drawing?
Drawing is a discipline through which I continually rediscover the world. I realized that what I had never drawn, I had never really seen. And that only when I start to draw an ordinary thing do I realize how unusual it is - a real miracle (Frederick Frank, “The Zen of Contemplation”).
You can draw in different ways: realistically, hyperrealistically, stylized, abstractly. There are many directions. They are all interesting in their own way. But in this course for beginning artists, we will learn the basic techniques of realistic drawing. With proper practice and systematic study, you will learn to draw absolutely any objects.
Course Description
The course that you are about to take will help you learn step by step how to draw with a pencil almost from scratch. Naturally, passing it does not guarantee high skill and professionalism, but you can still raise your skills and abilities to a whole new level, especially if you are a beginner.
Why do you need to learn to draw? Only you can answer this question yourself. Perhaps you are planning to go to study as an artist and make fine art your profession and life’s work. Perhaps your current job requires drawing skills, and you just need to master the basics. It is also possible that with the help of drawing you simply want to express yourself - your soul requires this, but no attempts lead to success.
Whatever your situation, our drawing course is designed to help you achieve your goal of learning to draw beautifully. Moreover, using the proposed methods, you will learn to draw almost any objects - from simpler ones (books, vases, fruits) to quite complex ones (such as trees, birds, animals, buildings).
However, don’t think that tomorrow you will become the next Picasso or da Vinci. To benefit from the course, you will need to study every day. Of course, it is not at all necessary to sit drawing for half a day, but you will still be required to follow a certain system and regularity - to practice you need 4-5 days a week for at least an hour (keep in mind that the longer your classes are, the faster the result will come and the better it will be).
The drawing course consists of seven lessons, each of which is devoted to mastering a specific topic and skill (we will say more about this a little later). To learn how to draw faster, we recommend not only going through all the classes systematically, but also making your practice as varied as possible.
Even if the lesson talks about, for example, how to draw a pear or an egg, you shouldn’t limit yourself to that. Feel free to take on other similar objects and start drawing them. Do this several times. Remember that drawing is a clear example of a practice in which quantity gradually turns into quality.
By following these simple recommendations, in just 2-3 weeks you will learn to depict well what you see in front of you, even if you start learning drawing completely from scratch. If you are persistent and practice longer, your artistry will begin to pleasantly surprise you within a few months.
How to learn to draw?
Of course, everyone has their own abilities and talents, characteristics and predispositions. For some, the art of drawing will come easily, while others will have to be more diligent and diligent in their independent learning. But, be that as it may, everyone can learn to draw beautifully.
In each of the drawing lessons you will find theory with a lot of illustrations, practical tasks and exercises. As we said, the course consists of seven lessons, and this was not done by chance - each lesson can be called a big step towards mastering the ability to draw.
As you progress through the lessons you will progress from simple to complex. As a result, what seemed difficult to you yesterday will begin to yield today, and tomorrow will not cause any difficulties. As is the case with our other training programs, when creating this course we tried present the material as intelligibly, clearly and concisely as possible, which makes it even more accessible to development.
To immediately pick up a high pace and start learning to draw quickly, you can watch all the lessons before the first lesson. This will allow you to understand what you have to deal with, and will also prevent you from rushing and eliminate the desire to get ahead of yourself (you should not move on to the next lesson without completing the previous one).
Plus, try to pay more attention to tasks that cause increased interest or difficulty. If something doesn’t work out the first time, try again to fully understand the basics and sufficiently master a particular skill.
7 drawing lessons
We invite you to review the summary of the seven lessons of the course to get an idea of what you can learn.
Lesson 1. Construction of the form. How to draw a flower
In the first lesson you will learn what prevents you from achieving similarity in the drawing process. You will learn to truly see the form, its features, and transfer these observations to paper with greater accuracy. You will do this using the sighting method, which will help you depict any object.
The lesson provides a detailed description of the method of sighting a simple and affordable alternative to such means. achieving image accuracy like the camera obscura and camera lucida used by artists of the past. Using the sighting method, you will learn to measure proportions, slopes of important lines, and more accurately find how the parts of the depicted composition are mutually located
After getting acquainted with the important rules of measurement, we will draw a flower together. This will be your first practice assignment in the drawing course.
Lesson 2. Linear perspective. How to draw a box and a book
The second lesson will deepen your knowledge of depicting objects. In it you will have to deal with linear perspective, the visual distortion of objects in space, and the principles of their image.
After completing this lesson, you will master some of the principles of creating the illusion of three-dimensional space. Here you will become familiar with concepts such as horizon lines and vanishing points. To consolidate the material covered, you will need to draw boxes with one and two vanishing points, and in conclusion you will draw a book based on photography.
Lesson 3. Circle in perspective. How to draw a mug and a vase
In the third lesson you will figure out how to depict objects based on circles: a teapot, a vase, a glass, a jug, a column, a lighthouse. The difficulty of depicting them in space lies in the fact that the principle of equidistance between the points of the circle and the center works only when you look at the plane directly, and in other cases you see a distortion of the shape of the circle, its transformation into an oval (ellipse).
In this lesson you will learn the principles of creating ellipses and complete several related tasks to practice this skill. After drawing ellipses, the task will become more complicated - you will need to draw a mug, and then a vase. The third and previous lessons are the basis for the linear depiction of volumetric shapes.
Lesson 4. Chiaroscuro. How to draw a house
If in previous lessons you depicted the form with lines, now you will move on to the tonal elaboration of the volume. To begin with, you will study in detail the concept of chiaroscuro and its components: light, penumbra, own shadow, reflex and falling shadow. Then you will learn about the factors that affect chiaroscuro (location and number of light sources).
The second part of the lesson consists mainly of practice. Together we will master shading and then draw a house and a cube. Thus, the fourth lesson will help you learn how to depict chiaroscuro on objects with pronounced edges.
Lesson 5. Chiaroscuro - continuation. How to Draw Fruits
In the fifth lesson you will again work with chiaroscuro, but now for rounded objects like a ball, cone, cylinder, as well as for those that combine several of these shapes.
We will continue to explore the topic of chiaroscuro with the tonal scale image. This practice will help you better see and depict tonal nuances. Thus, the transmission of light and shade in the drawing will be more convincing.
The next stage is a little theory and practice again. To begin with, we will talk about the basics of chiaroscuro on round objects, and then we will teach you how to draw an egg and a pear. At the end of the lesson, we will give some valuable tips for working with chiaroscuro.
Lesson 6. Texture. How to Draw Food
In previous lessons we looked at how to convey volume with shading. Another of its functions is to convey the material and texture of an object: whether it is smooth or rough, porous, with cracks, with a fibrous structure, covered with foliage or wool. To convey all this diversity, you cannot do with just a classic touch.
In the sixth lesson we will talk about decorative shading, which helps to reveal the character of the depicted object, for example, to convey the feeling of wind or the texture of grass, tree bark, sand. You will become familiar with the means to achieve a variety of textures and practice developing a new skill. At the end of the lesson, you will find an interesting task on drawing food.
Lesson 7. Final lesson. How to draw a tree
We will do a couple of interesting exercises: unusual drawing from the reverse (in which we will master an important principle of image object through the space surrounding it), we will make copies of drawings by famous masters (we will become better acquainted with their drawing techniques, handwriting). And then, using the information and skills obtained earlier (sighting method, knowledge of light and shade and methods of conveying texture), we will draw a tree.
At the end of the lesson, useful tips are provided that you can use to continue your creative journey. Now you know what you will learn. But don’t rush to start the first lesson, because you need to prepare well for learning.
