Any work to automate a real operating business is somewhat similar to surgical intervention on a living organism. After all, there is always a risk that the true reasons why automation was needed were not determined precisely enough. Or that the introduction of automated functions will not provide the increase in efficiency that the business owner expected. And there are quite a lot of such “or”s.
In order to reduce the risks associated with the above reasons, before starting the design automated system, you should analyze how the customer’s business actually works on present day. Find “bottlenecks” in its business processes, identify the most problematic elements of these processes and propose solutions that will help resolve existing problems without creating new ones.
And what is also very important, when offering a solution to the customer, it is necessary to clearly understand how this solution will be integrated into the operating “ecosystem” of the business, how will the responsibilities of the participants change business processes.
Such an analysis can only be done if you have a fairly complete business model, made in a form understandable to all project participants. One good approach is to use the UML language to build business models, which is also used to build other models in the project. This increases the consistency of models and also simplifies their construction and analysis.
Using the same notation to describe the business and the automated system improves mutual understanding between the customer, business analysts and the development team. Thanks to this, the needs and rules of the business can be clearly understood and included in the requirements to the designed system, which ultimately leads to an increase in the value of this system for customer.
