World Christianity - course 5950 rub. from Level One, training 10 lectures for 2 hours, Date: November 29, 2023.
Miscellaneous / / December 02, 2023
A course of lectures on the world's largest religion. Let's look at how Christianity influenced the history of Europe, how Catholics differ from Protestants, and why the 21st century is called the “century of Protestantism.”
“It seems to me that the history of religion is the shortest path to understanding what goes on in people’s heads. And there is nothing more interesting than people in the world. It may, of course, seem that religious studies is something special and abstruse. This is partly true, but there is no such complex material that cannot be presented clearly and interestingly. Unless, of course, the listener is afraid of the new, because in the religions of the world, especially in unusual, distant religions, there is a lot that calls into question even our most ordinary ideas."
Lectures last 2 hours and take place once or twice a week. Connect online to ask questions to an expert, and if you don’t have time, lecture recordings will always be available
Who was Jesus
Who was Jesus of Nazareth? What does modern science think about it? Let's try to look at the origins of Christianity neutrally, without religious piety and atheistic clichés. It is impossible to understand Christianity without the figure of Jesus, despite the huge difference between the sermons of two thousand years ago and the modern life of believers.
The First Followers of Jesus
Christianity became Christianity not only because of Jesus. The first generations of his followers also played a key role in this process: the apostles, evangelists, the first martyrs and the first theologians. Let's figure out who these people were and what role they played in the formation of religion.
Christianity in the Roman Empire
Christianity in the Roman Empire meant persecution, persecution and execution. At the lecture we will learn why Christianity, which arose in the Roman Empire, combined so poorly with it. What irritated the Romans about Christians, and what scared Christians in Rome? Without understanding this, one cannot understand either Christian ethics or the cult of saints, and therefore the entire subsequent history of this religion.
Disputes about the Trinity and more
Theological debates began as early as the 3rd century AD. This was a period of great debate, when Christianity became not just a doctrine, but also a philosophy, theology in the full sense of the word. At the lecture we will learn how the ideas of the Trinity and the nature of Christ arose. Let's understand how these ideas influenced the Christian church and why they led to great schisms?
Christianity conquers the West
The Church split into Orthodox and Catholic. Let's leave aside the history of Orthodoxy (we'll talk about it in detail in another course) and focus on the Western Church. At the lecture we will understand how Rome from a pagan center became a Christian shrine, and popes from provincial bishops turned into rulers of the world. Let's find out what role the Franks, Irish, Charlemagne and Muslims played in this.
How dads achieved everything and then lost
By the era of the High Middle Ages, the papacy had achieved everything that could be desired. It organized the Crusades, determined European policies, and decided what was good and bad for Europeans. At the lecture we will find out how this happened and why this greatness was so quickly replaced by a monstrous crisis.
History of monasticism
The Benedictines, Franciscans, Dominicans, Jesuits, Carmelites are all great organizations. They preserved culture and destroyed dissent, adhered to evangelical poverty and at the same time drowned in luxury. At the lecture we will talk about monasteries - a paradoxical and excitingly interesting topic.
Reformation: the most important event in European history
The Reformation of the Catholic Church is one of the most important events in the history of Europe. But why did it happen, and was it really all about Luther? In fact, it's not that simple. To understand this, we will have to look at the history of Western Christianity from the early 15th to the mid-16th century and trace the main processes and major changes.
History of Protestantism
Protestantism is the youngest and fastest growing of the main branches of Christianity. It was he who largely determined the successes of Europe in recent centuries: he helped both the scientific revolution and the development of the economy. At the lecture we will analyze the history of this religion and its current state: the rapid development of Protestantism continues to this day. Let's try to understand the intricacies of different movements of Protestantism, and find out why the 21st century will be the century of Protestantism.
History of Catholicism
The Catholic Church is still the largest religious organization in the world. How did she survive the centuries after the Reformation, how did she go through crises, how did she manage to gain more than she lost? We'll talk at the last lecture of the course.
