Bill Gates named the best books and lectures of 2023
Miscellaneous / / November 23, 2023
Plus a holiday playlist - we moved it to Yandex Music.
At the end of the year, Bill Gates usually shares book recommendations on his blog. In 2023, he continued the tradition and told about 3 books that he wants to recommend to everyone. Also on the list of recommendations was a course of lectures on economics, and to create a festive mood, a playlist of Christmas music with tracks from different countries.
Gates' book recommendations are:
- "Song of the Cell", Siddhartha Mukherjee. A new book by an American oncologist who received a Pulitzer Prize for his popular science book “The King of All Diseases. Biography of Cancer". In the new work, he explains how life evolved from single-celled organisms, and how any human disease ultimately comes down to some kind of problem with the cells. After reading, you begin to better understand how both diseases and our bodies work.
- "Not the End of the World" by Hannah Ritchie. An environmental activist is using data to argue that the climate is not as close to doomsday scenarios as all the news might lead you to believe. Yes, things are bad now and the climate is worse than it was in the distant past, but improvements are being observed in almost all respects. Gates recommends this book to anyone who wants to have informed conversations about the environment.
- «Inventions and Innovations: A Brief History of Hype and Failure, Vaclav Smil. It may seem that we are living in the most innovative era of human history, but a Czech-Canadian scientist disagrees. In the new book, he argues that we are now seeing “clear signs of technological stagnation and slowdown.” And although not everyone will agree with his predictions for the future (Gates, for example, does not agree), his excursion into the past and stories about how the inventions of the past helped us reach our current level of development deserve attention.
As for courses, Gates recommends Professor Timothy Taylor's Economics, Third Edition lecture series. The online course consists of 36 lectures and covers basic economics concepts. Gates believes that this knowledge will be useful to everyone - regardless of whether they have studied economics before or not.
Rounding out the list of recommendations is a selection of Christmas music on Spotify. You can listen to the original playlist Here, and we have collected in a separate playlist everything that is available on Yandex Music.
Now it’s your turn to share your recommendations! Write what books or lectures you liked in 2023.

Normal advice for those who are depressed and don’t want anything, they really help. Sometimes you have to remind yourself of all this. I would like to see more advice in the comments, and not these jokes, it is clear that these advice are not given to men. Sometimes it’s hard to force yourself to get dressed and go out, but you have to move. Anyway. At least move around the house, tidy up, throw out the garbage, put on the laundry, you slowly begin to sort out these routine things and it seems to let go. I start clearing the table, then I wipe the table, wash the dishes, and it seems easier. You can also include a video with funny cats, maybe this is what the author had in mind when she wrote about the shelter.
