Sometimes, along with such surprises of nature, ghost ships emerge.
Underwater volcanic eruption gave birth to a new island in the Pacific Ocean off Japan. A land mass with a diameter of 100 meters appeared near the island of Iwoto, which was once formed in a similar way.
The University of Tokyo reported that it was a phreatomagmatic eruption, which looks like underwater explosions and leads to a strong shock wave. This reaction occurs as a result of the interaction of magma with water.
Scientist Fukashi Maeno, who flew over the area right during this phenomenon, said that plumes of smoke and ash rose to a height of more than 50 meters. He also witnessed large rocks from the ocean floor whizzing through the air and streaks of brown pumice floating in the sea.
If the eruption continues, the new island could increase significantly in size. Otherwise, he will most likely get lost under the waves. Such appearances and disappearances are not uncommon in this region. In 2021, a new landmass also formed here, and then the seabed rose to such a level to the extent that two dozen ghost ships that sank during the battles in XX century.
