What vegetables can be planted before winter?
1. Onion
- When to plant: from mid-October to early November.
- Where to plant: well lit, sunny place.
In autumn you can plant onion sets or seeds both for obtaining juicy greens and for growing turnips. The main thing is to wait until the air temperature does not rise above 5 degrees, otherwise the onions will germinate in warm soil and will not survive the winter.
Level the soil in the garden bed with a rake to get rid of earth lumps. Make grooves about 4 cm deep for sets or 2 cm deep for seeds. The distance between rows should be at least 15–20 cm. Place the bulbs in furrows at a distance of 10 cm from each other for turnips or 1.5–2 cm for growing greens. Seeds should be sprinkled thickly to increase the chances of germination in the spring. Fill it with soil and compact its surface with your palm. If you planted seedlings and the soil in the garden bed is dry, moisten it with water using a hose or watering can with a diffuser attachment so as not to wash away the soil. Sown seeds should not be watered, otherwise they may rot.
2. Garlic
- When to plant: September October.
- Where to plant: well lit, sunny place.

Level the surface of the bed with a rake. The distance between garlic rows should be at least 20–25 cm. You can make furrows or individual holes about 5 cm deep. Place the cloves at a distance of 10–15 cm from each other, pressing them lightly into the ground, and then fill them with soil and gently compact its surface with your palms.
