The durability of the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro compared in a harsh drop test
Miscellaneous / / September 25, 2023
For the faint of heart, don't watch it (it's better to order a case).
New iPhone 15 released only today, September 22, but the first drop tests are already appearing on the Internet. So, tech blogger AppleTrack went to Australia to be one of the first to buy an iPhone 15 Pro, take an iPhone 14 Pro in the appendage, and then destroy both in severe durability tests.
After the first fall onto the side edge from waist level, a dent appeared on the frame of the iPhone 14 Pro, while the chip on the iPhone 15 Pro turned out to be very small. After two more falls from a higher height, a couple more marks appeared on both smartphones, but nothing serious - and the screens were not damaged at all.
Next, smartphones began to be dropped with their backs. The iPhone 15 Pro developed a noticeable chip in the frame after the first fall, and after the second, cracks in the glass. The iPhone 14 Pro, meanwhile, suffered a couple of dents on the frame. After a couple more throws, the iPhone 15 Pro broke the protective lens on one of its lenses, while the 14 Pro was still fine.
When it came to falling with the screen down, the situation repeated itself. After the second drop, the glass of the iPhone 15 Pro cracked, while the 14 Pro survived all three drops without loss.
After this, it was time for the most severe throws - from a height of about 2 meters, still onto concrete. The very first fall on the back cover broke the back glass of the iPhone 15 Pro, and two lenses on the camera were already cracked. Can you guess what happened to the iPhone 14 Pro? That's right - nothing but scratches and chips on the steel frame. Both smartphones survived a fall onto the screen from the same height.
Then the author raised the stakes again - and began throwing devices from 4 meters. The very first throw destroyed half the screen of the iPhone 15 Pro, while the iPhone 14 Pro remained without noticeable damage to both the front and back - it seems that the steel frame took the entire blow. The final boss was a throw from 6 meters. The iPhone 14 Pro was broken on both sides, but the screen and cameras remained fully functional. As for the iPhone 15 Pro? The screen completely died, the lens lenses broke and flew out, and the camera unit completely flew out of the body.
It seems that the rounded edges of the frames of the new iPhone 15 Pro have significantly reduced its resistance to damage. The smartphone is significantly inferior to last year's model despite the use of titanium.
