When and how to transplant roses to a new place
Miscellaneous / / September 13, 2023
Perhaps the most difficult thing is to carefully dig up the plant.
When to replant roses
This is done when you need to move the bush to another place due to moving or when redeveloping the site. But in addition, timely transplantation into fresh nutrient soil helps to save roses if they begin to bloom poorly and develop poorly, despite regular feeding, or are often affected by diseases and pests.
Roses can be moved to a new flowerbed at the beginning and end of the season. In spring, you should wait until the snow melts, the soil thaws, and during the day the air temperature becomes positive. Depending on the climate and region, suitable dates are March-April. The main thing is to do it before the buds start to swell on the branches.
The approximate time frame for autumn transplantation is from the beginning of September to the end of October. At this time, roses stop actively growing new shoots and gradually prepare for winter dormancy. Focus on the weather in your area to replant the bush at least 3 weeks before frost arrives. This way it will have time to settle in and withstand the cold.
How to choose a place to transplant a rose
Find a well-lit, sunny area in garden or vegetable garden, protected from strong winds and drafts. Make sure that during the day the flowerbed will not be shaded by other plants or buildings. Replant climbing roses so that there is enough space nearby to install a pergola, arch or other support. Scrubs and park varieties grow rapidly, so place them where they will not crowd out other plants.
How to dig up a rose for replanting
If you are replanting a large mature bush or climbing rose, pre-cut all shoots with sharp pruning shears to a height of about 40–50 cm from the ground. This will make it easier to carry out all manipulations with the plant.
When replanting in autumn, also trim off all the leaves from the branches so that they do not take away nutrition from the plant.
Dig a trench along the diameter of the crown of the bush. Its depth is the bayonet of a shovel. If the rose is old, it may have to go further into the ground.
Gradually dig up the soil around the rose, freeing the main, thick rhizome from the soil.
Grab the stems at the base of the bush and pull it out of the ground. In the process, the roots will be damaged one way or another, but this is not a big deal.
If the plant does not give in, dig out the main roots to an even greater depth until you can remove the bush.
How to replant roses
Dig a planting hole, the diameter and depth of which will be approximately 15 cm greater than the volume of the rose's root system. Place rotted manure or compost layer 15 cm, add 2 tablespoons of wood ash and mix all ingredients.
Place the rose in the center of the indentation. Make sure that the root collar (where roots and stems meet) is 3–5 cm below the ground surface on flower bed. If necessary, add soil to the bottom of the hole or remove excess layer.
Fill the voids around the roots with soil up to about the middle of the planting hole. Water the soil around the seedling with about 5 liters of water and wait until it is absorbed.
After this, fill the hole to the top with earth. Compact the surface with your palms.
Pour 10–15 liters of water under the bush.
How to care for roses after transplantation
Monitor the soil moisture in the flowerbed and do not allow it to dry out. In dry weather, water approximately once every 3 days. A young plant will need about 20 liters of water, an adult rose - 30–40 liters. Try to pour the liquid strictly under the root of the bush and do it early in the morning or in the evening, at sunset, so that the drops under the influence of the sun do not burn the shoots and leaves. With the arrival of frost, there is no need to moisten the soil.
In autumn, when the air temperature during the week will range from −1 to −5 °C, do not forget to cover the rose for the winter. For information on how to do this correctly, read our material.
