When and how to transplant raspberries
Miscellaneous / / August 25, 2023
This will help to get a lot of large and sweet berries in the future.
When to transplant raspberries
The procedure is carried out every 5-6 years. During this time, the raspberry grows strongly, turning into an impenetrable jungle. The soil in it gradually becomes poorer, fruiting becomes less massive, and the berries become smaller. If you notice that this is happening with your bushes, it's time to think about transplanting them.
Raspberries are transferred to a new place at the very beginning of the summer season, when it has not yet begun to grow, or in the fall with the onset of a dormant period for plants. So, the timing of spring transplantation in the south falls on the end of March - the end of April, in the middle lane - in mid-April - mid-May, in the northern regions - in May.
Autumn raspberry transplantation in the south is carried out from early October to mid-November, in the middle lane - during September, in the north - from mid-August to mid-September. The main thing is to do this 2-3 weeks before the onset of frost, so that the plants take root in the new site and can easily endure the winter.
How to choose a place for transplanting raspberries
Find a well-lit area for the shrub, protected from strong winds. Light shading is allowed during the midday hours. This culture needs a lot of sunlight, otherwise the berries will be small and not as sweet. In addition, remember that raspberries grow very intensively, so plan to plant them at least a meter from other plants in garden and vegetable garden.
You should not plant shrubs in the same place where raspberries, strawberries, gooseberries and currants used to grow. Suitable precursors include onions, garlic, zucchini, cucumbers, legumes and various green manure.
How to dig up raspberries for transplanting
Both at the beginning and at the end of the season, you must first cut raspberry stalks sharp secateurs to a height of 40–60 cm. So the bushes after transplantation will not waste energy on feeding long shoots and will concentrate on growing roots. If there are leaves on the raspberries during the autumn procedure, they should also be removed.
Step back about 20-30 cm from the center of the bush and dig it. Drive the shovel all the way into the ground and lift the earthen ball with the roots from below with a rocking motion.
Remove the raspberries along with the earthy clod from the ground, holding the branches with your hands. One way or another, the roots will be damaged in the process, but this is not scary.
How to transplant raspberries
Dig planting holes 30 cm deep and 30 cm in diameter. The optimal distance between the bushes is about 1 m. Fill each hole halfway with compost or rotted manure, add 2 tablespoons of superphosphate, 100 g of wood ash or dolomite flour. Thoroughly mix all the ingredients with your hands or any convenient garden tool.
Place the seedling along with the earthen clod in the planting hole. Make sure the root collar (where the roots and stems meet) is flush with the ground in the raspberry planter. If necessary, fill the bottom of the hole with soil or remove excess.
Fill all the voids around the roots with soil, and then compact its surface with your palms.
Water the seedling generously with water. One bush will need at least 2-3 liters.
Mulch the trunk circle with rotted manure, peat, compost or sawdust with a layer of 5–10 cm. This will protect the plant from drying out and give it additional nutrition.
How to care for raspberries after transplanting
In the first year after planting, the bushes will not require additional top dressing. They will take all the necessary food from the landing pit. Also, raspberries do not need shelter for the winter, because they can endure even severe cold.
All care for transplanted raspberries consists in regular watering. Make sure the soil is always moist and do not let it dry out. Usually the bushes are watered once a week, and in dry weather - two to three times more often. One plant will need about 2-3 liters of water. About two weeks before the arrival of autumn frosts, watering should be stopped.
