Gran Turismo is probably the dumbest movie of 2023. And how else to film the race?
Miscellaneous / / August 12, 2023
On August 9, the film "Gran Turismo" was released worldwide.
Its plot is partly based on real events. In 2008, the Nissan PlayStation GT Academy was launched - a TV show for gamers, from which they tried to make real racers. One of them, Ian Munderborough, managed to launch a career and even took third place at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the most prestigious endurance race. The writers took his story and changed quite a lot of it to make it a more emotional drama.
Film directed by Neil Blomkamp (District 9). The script was written by Zach Baylin (King Richard), Jason Hall (The Sniper) and Alex Tse (Watchmen).
The film stars Archie Madekwe ("All Bo's Fears"), David Harbour ("very strange things”), Orlando Bloom (“Pirates of the Caribbean”), Djimon Hounsou (“Blood Diamond”) and others.
Ian Manderborough is an ordinary guy who likes to drive in the Gran Turismo on a console. When the game maker announces that it is going to give the best users the opportunity to launch a real racing career, Jan wins the pre-selection. Now he must prove to himself and to the whole world that he is ready to become a professional.
Silly sports drama
The writers had a real story in front of their eyes, but for some reason they chose to make it too banal sports drama in the spirit of "Goal". For example, the third place in the most prestigious race in history, occupied by the real Manderborough, is not enough for the authors - they think of a victory. Just to make it tougher. They also use the accident in which the viewer died as a motivational moment for the main character. It would seem that this will only motivate psychopath and a killer, but the writers don't see that as a problem.
The writers not only ignore the real story, but also the logic of motorsport. As if the authors were too lazy to watch at least a couple of races in different classes. In one of the episodes, a racer on the track is asked how much fuel he has left - in fact, these things are a lot years are monitored by a computer (modern technologies give online even the temperature of each individual tires). And then overtaking is shown in the spirit of “I’ll crash into this dude and knock him out” - well, they don’t drive like that in reality, the judges will give a fine and disqualify.
When it seems that it can't be more delusional, the authors increase the degree of absurdity. In one of the races, the hero gets into an accident, because he was not warned about the dangerous section of the track. In fact, racers not only practice on the tracks beforehand, but also walk on them - they must know road by heart. And then "Oh, dangerous area."
Well, sometimes the greatness of "Gran Turismo" is so exaggerated that it becomes sickening. In one of the episodes, the main character determines that the car's brake pads have worn out, because he saw this in the game - that's realism.
Naturally, the film does not have to comply with the real rules of motorsport, but at least the general logic must be preserved. First, Jan does a bunch of races to get a license, and then his former rivals become partners without going through any tests - and within the picture there seems to be no contradictions.
Too flat characters
The actors of "Gran Turismo", to put it mildly, do not shine with intelligence. The main character dreamed of becoming a racer, and therefore played the computer - apparently, karting was not invented in his universe. But when you look at his father, you understand who the young man went to gamer.
For example, a parent forces his son to become a laborer because he plays in Gran Turismo. And this is to show what happens if the guy "does not have a plan for life." The guy himself is already employed at this time - he is a salesman in a clothing store, that is, he is familiar with the real world.
classic story about family, characteristic of sports dramas, is falling apart due to the fact that Jan's relatives are given a minimum of screen time. At the beginning of the film, there is an evil father and a kind mother, as well as an unruly brother. At first, no one believes in the young racer, and then they seem to support him, but in their relationship there is neither kindness nor love - only banal phrases. And the brother disappears altogether - for some reason they simply stop showing him.
All the characters in the film are so simple that their "revelations" and "changes" are read from the first minutes. Whether it's an engineer who was once a promising racer, or a marketer who only thinks about contracts. And there are also self-confident stupid rivals of the protagonist, a simple lover and other characters contained in any banal sports drama.
Gran Turismo is the movie that the average kid wanted to see at the age of eight. Silly, banal, flashy sports drama about how useful the console is - well, really, it's nice to go to such a movie after school. However, watching "Gran Turismo" at an older age is unbearable. The tape takes the worst of sports dramas, distorts the real (quite inspiring) history and too brazenly advertises the game.
