Why you can not put an empty bottle on the table
Miscellaneous / / August 04, 2023
Many people do this, but few know why.
Many during the feast scrupulously ensure that the empty bottles go under the table. At the same time, the reasons for such a tradition are vaguely guessed - lack of money, “empty” life and other misfortunes are mentioned. Its exact origin is unknown - there are only a few assumptions.
The ancient Slavs often have empty objects mentioned in superstition as an omen of poverty, misfortune and death. Moreover, they were seen as a threat. There is even a proverb associated with such fears: “From an empty mansion, either an owl, or an owl, or Satan himself.”
Such beliefs influenced household prohibitions and prescriptions. For example, during a thunderstorm it was customary to turn over empty household utensils and dishes so that the evil spirits and devils persecuted by Saint Elijah would not hide there. Echoes of these beliefs have survived to this day. So, a woman with an empty bucket, crossing the road, promises misfortune or bad luck.
It is logical to assume that the empty bottles on the table could be seen as a haven for evil spirits, and therefore were removed away.
In addition to ancient beliefs, there is another legend popular on the Web, which is often explained as a sign. We are talking about the enterprising Cossacks who stood in Paris in 1814 - after the Russian troops occupied the city. In French establishments, it was then allegedly customary to count the amount drunk by empty bottles at the end of a meal. Well, the Cossacks came up with the idea of cleaning the container under the table in order to pay less.
It is difficult to say how true this story is. Because the superstitious people they remove the bottles, fearing bad luck and poverty, it can be assumed that the signs still have a more ancient origin. Either the old beliefs were superimposed on more modern reasons and formed a stable household prohibition, which is still observed.
Be that as it may, superstitions have little to do with real life, and empty containers on the table can only lead to trouble in the form of an overturned bottle.
