It also attacks other popular messengers.
Security experts at CYFIRMA have discovered a fake Android app called SafeChat that infects devices with spyware. About it informs Bleeping Computer.
The virus aims to steal sensitive data from popular messengers including Telegram, Signal, WhatsApp and Viber. It even copies call logs, text messages and GPS location details.
CYFIRMA noted that hackers often persuade victims to install SafeChat under the pretext of transferring the conversation to a more secure platform. The application itself has an interface similar to real messengers and the usual user registration process, which increases the credibility of the program.
During the process of creating a profile, the fake app asks for permissions to access various data and features. After that, he establishes a connection with the instant messengers already on the device. This is what allows attackers to get all the necessary information.
It is already known that SafeChat was created by the Indian hacker group APT Bahamut. Her most recent attacks were carried out mainly through WhatsApp phishing messages.
