Windows 10 and 11 update and shutdown function broken
Miscellaneous / / August 02, 2023
Those who leave the computer to update at night and go to bed may be in for an unpleasant surprise in the morning.
Windows 10 and 11 users have noticed that the Update and shutdown option on the system does not work correctly. According to messages from the Windows support forums and Reddit, for many users, the system perceives this command as a recommendation, not a requirement, and often restarts the computer anyway.
Windows Latest Edition consulted with a former Microsoft developer to find out why. He suggested that it was the quick start function. When the user shuts down the computer, some system data is saved to a temporary file to speed up the next startup. However, failure of this feature may result in the computer restarting instead of shutting down unintentionally: Quick Start is activated too early.
The second possible reason is the updates themselves. If you haven't updated your computer in weeks or months, or the update hasn't been completed, Windows 10 and 11 may need to restart to continue with the installation.
From Microsoft itself, comments have not yet been received. There is no solution, so if it is important for you that the computer turns off, it is worth checking this manually. It is noted that not all users are affected: for some, the computer still turns off after the update.
