Titanium body, narrow bezels, USB-C port and more.
Bloomberg columnist Mark Gurman shared a number of fresh details about the upcoming updates from Apple, the main of which will be the iPhone 15 models.
According to an insider, Apple designers have long tried to make a truly full-screen iPhone - without frames around the display and cutouts for cameras or sensors. With the release of the iPhone 15 this fall, the company will take another step towards that goal.
Standard iPhone 15 models will replace the notch with Dynamic Island, while the Pro and Pro Max versions will will be made using a new technology: low-pressure injection molding or “LIPO”, as it is called internally Apple.
This new process will reduce the bezel around the display to 1.5mm (current iPhones are 2.2mm). LIPO was used on the Apple Watch Series 7 and 8 to make the bezels of the devices thinner and the display larger. Eventually, Apple plans to bring this technology to the iPad as well.
Here are some more interesting details.:
- The base iPhone 15 and 15 Plus will be similar to the current models, but will get significant camera upgrades, an A16 chip from the iPhone 14 Pro line, and a USB-C connector instead of Lightning.
- The Pro models will get a new design, and the shiny and easily soiled edges of stainless steel will be replaced with stronger, lighter and premium titanium.
- The design of the Pro models will keep the frosted glass on the back, but the edges connecting the side and front will be less sharp.
- The interior of the iPhone 15 Pro will be seriously redesigned, making it easier to repair the phone.
- The top model of the smartphone will also receive updated lenses and a much wider optical zoom range of the camera.
Separately, the insider noted that Apple planned another important feature for the Pro models: touch buttons with tactile feedback for volume control, mute/ringer switch and button nutrition. However, this improvement, codenamed Bongo, was canceled due to many technical problems.
In the end, the company decided to keep the standard volume and power buttons, but turn the mute switch into a so-called Action button (“Action”)—as on an Apple Watch—that users can customize through software.
And of course, the prices of new smartphones outside the US will be increased - at least on the Pro model - given the transition to titanium and a more expensive camera system in the iPhone 15 Pro Max. About this earlier reported.
As an addition, Gurman told a few details about the new generation of smart watches. Here's the main thing:
- The line will include three tiers: the 41mm and 45mm Series 9 models, as well as the second-generation Apple Watch Ultra.
- There will be no new Apple Watch SE, which is logical, since this model is updated every two years
- All models will get a pretty significant performance boost thanks to the new S9 processor.
- Before the release of last year's Ultra, Apple tested a Dark Titanium variant. It was ultimately canceled because the designers didn't like the look, but theoretically it could still arrive in 2023.
