What happens if you swallow a pit from a plum
Our body can easily get rid from swallowed foreign objects, including fruit seeds. It will most likely come out on its own in a couple of days.
Plum pits are generally safe as long as they don't clog the airways. Since they are large enough, they can get stuck in the esophagus and interfere with breathing.
But some species are toxic. They may contain cyanogenic glycosides, that is, substances that are broken down by enzymes in the gastrointestinal tract and converted into poisonous hydrogen cyanide.
We did not find any cases poisoning in humans, but they occur in dogs, cats, and horses. In this case appear such symptoms:
- staining of the mucous membranes in a brick red color;
- pupil dilation;
- difficulty breathing;
- dyspnea;
- sudden drop in pressure respiratory depression and circulation - shock.
What to do if you are choking or have other symptoms
If you start to cough, then you do not need to do anything. So the body tries to expel the bone.
If you're suffocating, then try execute Heimlich maneuver.
- Make a fist with one hand and place it on your stomach just above your navel.
- With the palm of your other hand, cover your fist and quickly press it into your stomach in an upward direction.
- Continue until the airway is clear.
You can also use the back of a chair or the corner of a table. Stand so that the edge of the support is at the level of the stomach, and sharply press on the stomach to the spine and up.
If there is an adult nearby, you can ask him for help. He should do the following:
- Stand behind the choking person and put one leg back a little for better balance.
- Wrap your arms around your waist. Tilt the person forward slightly.
- Place the fist of one hand between navel and ribs.
- Take hold of the fist with the other hand. Press on the stomach with a quick push up, as if trying to lift a person.
- Do five pushes. If the airways are not cleared, repeat again.
If you do not feel that it immediately became difficult to breathe, then you need to wait and monitor your well-being. But if you are worried about your condition, then you should seek help. Call the hotline 122 and consult with the operator on how best to proceed.
