How to connect wireless headphones to your phone

Step-by-step instructions for Android and iPhone, as well as important details and useful tips.
What is important to know
All Bluetooth headphones connect to smartphones in the same way, regardless of design (TWS, with cable, invoices) and the manufacturer (Sony, JBL, Apple, Huawei, Xiaomi, and so on), as well as the operating system in the phone (Android, iOS). The procedure is universal and completely identical except for minor details.
Apple headphones stand a little apart. Connection in them is implemented a little easier than in other models. In addition, when using AirPods with Android smartphones, some features such as viewing the charge, selecting gestures, and switching transparency modes will not be available. However, this can be fixed with a couple of tricks.
For the convenience of readers, we will conditionally divide the headphones into “any wireless” and AirPods, and then consider each category from the perspective of an Android smartphone user and iPhone owners.
How to connect wireless headphones to an Android smartphone
Put your headphones into pairing mode by doing one of the following:
- just take them out of the case;
- if there is a button on the case, press and hold for a while;
- if there are buttons on the headphones themselves, hold them down for a few seconds.
Confirmation that the headphones have switched to the search mode will be a flashing or color-changing indicator or a sound signal.
Open "Settings" → Bluetooth and make sure the module is turned on. Click "Add device" and select the one you need from the list of found ones.
Tap "Add", allowing access to the log, and the headphones will appear in the list of paired devices in the Bluetooth settings. All is ready.
To turn off the headphones, simply hide them in the case. You can also disconnect them in the settings on your smartphone or turn off the Bluetooth module completely in the blind.
The next time there will be no need to do all of the above - the headphones will connect immediately after being removed from the case or after pressing the activation button on overhead and cable models. If for some reason this does not happen, open the Bluetooth settings and tap on the headphones in the list of paired devices.
How to Connect Wireless Headphones to iPhone
Put the accessory into search mode by taking it out of the case and pressing the button on the case or headphones for a few seconds until the LED indicator turns on, its color changes or the sound signal changes.
Open Settings → Bluetooth on your smartphone and turn it on if it is disabled.
Your iPhone will automatically scan and your headphones will appear under Other Devices. Tap on them, and then they will move to the "My devices" block, which will mean the end of the pairing process. Done, you can use it.
When you listen music, put the TWS earbuds in the case, press the off button on models with a cable or on-ear models. You can also turn off the headphones by tapping on them in "My Devices" in the settings. And if you do not use other wireless gadgets, try completely disabling the Bluetooth module - this will automatically disconnect the headphones.
Next time, it will be enough to remove the TWS device from the case with the Bluetooth module on the iPhone active, or turn on overhead or cable models with a short press of the button. If suddenly automatic activation does not follow, open "Settings" → Bluetooth and tap on the name of the accessory in the "My devices" list.
How to Connect AirPods to iPhone
Open the lid of the AirPods case and, without removing them, bring them to the unlocked iPhone.
In the animation that appears on the screen, click "Connect". If the headphones were previously used with another iPhone and you see the inscription "Not your AirPods" - hold down the button on the case and hold for about 10 seconds to reset.
If you want to Siri read notifications, tap on the "Announce calls and notifications" box (the function can be configured by clicking the appropriate button). If not, close the window. AirPods are ready to use and can be accessed from any Apple device associated with your Apple ID.
The headphones will automatically turn off when you put them in the case. And in the same way, they will connect themselves when the case lid is opened.
How to Connect AirPods to an Android Smartphone
Press the button on the AirPods case for 3 seconds until the LED flashes white.
Open "Settings" → Bluetooth and turn on the module if it is inactive. Select your headphones from the list of auto-found gadgets, or click "Add Device" to search first.
Allow the use of the log and confirm the connection by tapping Add. AirPods will appear in the list of paired devices and are ready to go.
To turn off the headphones, hide them in a case, tap on the name in the list of Bluetooth devices in the settings, or deactivate Bluetooth in the notification shade.
Further, AirPods will automatically connect when the case is opened, provided that Bluetooth is active on the smartphone.
AirPods will work on Android as usual wireless headphones: You can listen to music, change tracks and pause, use noise reduction. However, connection animations, changing gesture settings, selecting transparency modes, and ear sensors are not available.
To reconfigure gestures, use this trick: connect AirPods to any iPhone and set the desired actions - they will be saved and will work in Android too.
If you install one of the third-party AirPods apps from Google Play, such as Assistant Trigger, then when you open the case, a window with the charge level will appear. The utility also allows you to select gestures and set some settings that increase ease of use.

Sometimes you may encounter the problem of a very quiet sound in AirPods. To fix this, go to "Settings" → "About phone" → and tap "Build number" 10 times. Then return to the "System" section and in the "For Developers" item that appears, activate the "Disable absolute volume level" toggle switch.
