This is what we're watching: "Taboo" - a series in which Tom Hardy undresses, smears himself with ashes, goes crazy
Miscellaneous / / July 04, 2023
You will not see such Hardy in Hollywood projects.
In the new series Articles every week I talk about what films and TV shows struck me.
And, perhaps, it will not be possible to do without "Taboo". This is a series with animal energy, to which the script was written by Tom Hardy himself - with the help of his father and Stephen Knight ("Peaky Blinders").
Aggression, madness and lust are twisted to the maximum. “Taboo” can be called a dirty and grotesque series, unable to maintain balance, but against the backdrop of polished and average shows, it looks profitable. This is Burzum and Carcass against Metallica and Def Leppard.
In some places "Taboo" is not even grotesque, but provocative. Visuals woven from black magic, classic British costumes and bestial charisma Tom Hardy overrides the story. Not surprisingly, after watching, you can easily remember a bunch of vivid scenes, but not the plot.
Not only the main characters and emotions are drawn with broad strokes, but also the general plot. Beginning of the 19th century. The East India Company, the British government and US agents divide the land around the world, and at the center of the conflict it turns out that James Kezaya Delaney, who lived in Africa for 10 years, got a piece of land from his father, which he needs everyone. And it is immediately clear that all parties will seek rational profit, and Delaney will follow madness. The conditional John Wick would start just killing enemies, but James Delaney takes out magical artifacts. John Wick refers to honor and conscience, Delaney refers to infernality.
Tom Hardy is perhaps one of the most underrated actors of his generation. "Stuart: Past Life", "Bronson", "Lok”- brilliant pictures in which he reveals himself as a brilliant actor. But the years of Hollywood, not the most difficult roles, apparently, tired the Englishman. It seems that "Taboo" was invented only to make Hardy enjoy filming.
The absolutely wild first season looks in one breath - it has only 8 episodes. 6 years have passed, the promised sequel has not come out, although Steven Wright once a year reports that it will be. Looks like we have to wait until Tom Hardy gets sick of "Venom». And the worse it becomes, the crazier the second season will turn out - the main thing is to wait.
