“You are brazenly manipulated, but you don’t want to resist.” How did Indiana Jones and the Wheel of Fate turn out?
Miscellaneous / / June 30, 2023
Harrison Ford is still amazing.
On June 28, Indiana Jones and the Wheel of Fortune was released worldwide. The fifth part of the story about the archaeologist is unlikely to win new fans, but will please the old ones.
Every year it seemed more and more that the planned shooting would not happen at all: Harrison Ford was not getting any younger, and it was difficult to imagine a picture without his outrageous adventures. It is all the more surprising that the film, released a few days before Ford's 81st birthday, turned out to be not only interesting, but also dynamic.
Indiana Jones and the Wheel of Fortune is the first film in the franchise not to have been made. Steven Spielberg. He gave the post of director to James Mangold ("Train to Yuma", "Logan", "Ford v Ferrari"). The script was written by the Butterworth Brothers (Ford v Ferrari) and David Koepp (Jurassic Park).
Starring Harrison Ford, Mads Mikkelsen and Phoebe Waller Bridge.
1969 Indiana Jones is preparing for a peaceful old age. During one of the gatherings in the bar, he meets Elena, the daughter of his old, now deceased friend Basil Shaw. She claims that the Nazis are looking for the second part of Antikythera -

The third part of "Indiana Jones" appeared in 1989, and 19 years later "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" was released. The new film is interesting to compare with the fourth part. The fact is that the last picture tried to show something new, from the son of the protagonist to new adventures. But "Indiana Jones and the Wheel of Fate" is built completely differently - it is entirely based on nostalgia. Scattered throughout the references (old characters, familiar names of artifacts) play a much larger role than the plot and new problems.
The only thing that justifies such a strong emphasis on nostalgia - she works. While watching, you perfectly understand that you are being brazenly manipulated, but you don’t want to resist. All references to the place, and Indiana Jones himself is a hero who does not become obsolete. If you liked it as a child, you will always like it. The writers understand this, so Indiana gets all the screen time - although there was a fear that the already elderly Ford would be tried dilute with secondary characters, but they are perfectly built into the overall narrative, which focuses on the main character.
Great action
The new "Indiana Jones" does not compete with the franchises from which the viewer is used to getting action - this is not at all "Fast and the Furious", "Mission Impossible" or "John Wick». The writers and director are well aware of the physical capabilities of Harrison Ford, so they do not put him in an awkward position. The only segment in which Indiana destroys enemies in a youthful way is shown at the very beginning - and this is a rejuvenated version of Harrison Ford. In the future, everything is simpler, an 80-year-old actor plays a 70-year-old hero, so he does not run and jump too much, but he is still in dynamics. There is, though simple, but still self-irony on the topic of age. In general, Indiana now uses more wit than muscle.
It is in the action that the director takes the camera away from Ford a bit so that the younger actors show their energy. It was possible to draw ridiculous scenery around Indiana Jones and add life to the chromakey, but, fortunately, nothing happened. The action matches the hero, which is great.
Brilliant secondary actors
Indiana has always pleased minor characters (even if we are talking about La Beau), the fifth part was no exception. The cast of the fifth part looked perfect even before the release of the film, and expectations were fully met. Mads Mikkelsen, Phoebe Waller-Bridge are brilliant actors who delight in every scene. It seems to be the perfect cast. Although there are no less excellent artists who get less screen time - Antonio Banderas, Toby Jones, Boyd Holbrook and others.
"Indiana Jones and the Wheel of Fate" - 140 minutes of nostalgia, seasoned with good actors and a good plot. If you haven't watched any parts of history, then you definitely won’t like the picture - it’s just not shot for you. Perhaps the writers could have done something more interesting, but you have to consider Ford's age and four films behind him, so there was relatively little wiggle room.
