How to change your profession and not suffer: 8 tips from responsible people
Miscellaneous / / June 26, 2023
1. Decide on the scale of change
Analyze what you like about your current job and what you don't like. Small salaries, uninteresting tasks, career ceiling - all this can be the problems of the industry, not the profession. For example, if you are a lawyer in a factory, try to look for options in IT or media. They also need people who understand the laws, but the routine and conditions are different.
Fundamental changes require more time and resources. It is better to study the market situation in advance: look at the list of required skills, the number of vacancies and the level of salaries. So you will immediately understand which options are suitable, and which ones are better not to waste time on.

I started thinking about a new career during the pandemic. I wanted to find a specialty that would allow me to work remotely. A material scientist cannot count on such conditions. The choice fell on UX/UI design. This profession attracted me even while studying at the master's program of the chemical faculty. But then there was not much time - I was torn between work and university.
If you want to change your profession, but have not yet decided what you like, take a closer look at IT. IN Yandex Practicum train specialists in various fields - from programmers and marketers to managers and designers. You can study remotely on real projects and exercises that are hosted on a separate platform. And mentors and reviewers will help you sort out difficult issues.
Is it difficult to choose an IT direction? Start free career guidance testcompiled by the experts of the Workshop and methodologists of Moscow State University. It will take 30 minutes, at the end you will receive an analysis of your experience and interests, and also a list of professions that will suit you.

2. Listen to yourself
Sometimes changing careers isn't about burnout or looking for a higher paycheck. It happens that work simply does not meet inner desires, and thoughts about tasks cause only melancholy. It is never too late to look for yourself, and if conditions allow, it is worth trying something new.

She trained as a makeup artist while working as an editor on a TV channel.
I have always loved cosmetics and makeup. I followed various masters on social networks and one day I saw that one of my idols was launching a course. Didn't doubt for a second. On weekdays she worked on TV, and every Saturday she studied.

She began to study journalism while studying at a medical school.
I am from a family of doctors. My parents were sure that I would follow in their footsteps. When it came time to choose a university, I already understood that the profession was not for me - I always loved to write and wanted to write texts. We came to a compromise: I will get the first degree in medicine, and if later I want to try myself in another, my parents will support me. As a result, in the third year she also entered the specialty "Media and Communication".
3. Get to grips with the schedule
You can get acquainted with a new profession with the help of books and video tutorials or courses. The first method is cheaper, and the second is easier to organize: you don’t have to look for materials on your own. In any case, retraining is rarely quick. It takes several months to become a hairdresser-colorist. It will take at least six months to learn the Python programming language, while you need to develop regularly, allocating 10-15 free hours a week. Perhaps carving out this time will be possible with the help of scheduling applications or time trackers.

I combined the course with my studies at the university. I made a clear daily routine so as not to be distracted and have time for everything. For example, after couples, I didn’t go home, but to a coworking space. It was closer to the university, so I did not lose time on the road. In the classroom, the Pomodoro technique helped: I studied for 25 minutes, then rested for 5 minutes - so in a circle.

I started studying on my own. I made a schedule in the Notion app and mastered the material. But I didn’t have enough consistency, so I found courses on UI / UX design. During my studies, I burned out, so I advise you to clearly prioritize. It will not work to integrate lessons into a tight schedule. Be prepared to reduce some of your usual activities, and give up something for a while.
4. Put together a financial pillow
It will come in handy in order to comfortably combine work with study and not worry about additional costs for courses and books. It is desirable that the stock is enough for a year of habitual life. You will have to start in a new profession from scratch, earnings at the start will probably be small - the money set aside will help you stay calm. If there is no financial cushion, do not rush to leave your old place - consider a training format that can be combined with work.

I took my first steps in the media while working as a doctor, actively writing in my free time. It turned out 20-25 articles per month - this is a lot. But I quickly got my hands on it and realized how much you can earn with my skills. I left medicine only when I realized that I had enough income in the media.
5. Make a career plan
This is not an answer to the question “Where do you see yourself in 5 years”, but a table with clear deadlines. Suppose you want to work for a particular company. See what requirements are written in the vacancies, what skills you already have, and what you need to improve. For example, if you are studying to become a Python developer, you could write in the table “Study jobs in my region for week", "Start classes no later than the beginning of September", "Understand how to use the Django framework in 2 months."

In order not to deviate from your career plan, figure out who you can report to. Understanding that results are expected will help not to be lazy. If you are working on a project for a portfolio, that is, without a customer, promise your friends: “I am making a website, I will show it in two weeks.”
6. Freelancing
It is better to quit when you already have a new offer. But no one has canceled the experience trap: employers want to get a seasoned employee, but where to practice if they don’t take them anywhere? Start looking for freelance jobs while you work at your current job and study. And if it doesn’t work out, come up with a personal project. It may or may not be for a real company. The main thing is that you will be able to add the results to the portfolio.

When there were no published works yet, I found customers on sites with vacancies and wrote articles that could potentially be of interest to them. I took into account the theme and style of publications. So I got a good portfolio.
Another useful tool is social media. With them it will be easier to search for orders and collect a professional circle of contacts.

During my studies, I agreed to help in photo projects. I didn’t receive money, but I made acquaintances, gained experience, watched how everything worked. Everything I did was posted on social media. So, I made it clear to subscribers that I was now doing makeup, showed progress and created a portfolio.
7. Work on your resume
A resume is the first thing a recruiter sees, so he will have to pay attention. Since you don't have a lot of experience in the new field, list the internships and temporary projects you've been involved in. Information about previous jobs will also come in handy: think about how your experience can be useful in a new specialty, and mark achievements. If possible, show your resume to current professionals, familiar recruiters, or contact career consultants.

Once I read a life hack that if there are no known IT people, you need to go to professional chats and make connections there. I met two experts and asked to check the resume. They explained that you should not praise yourself, but concentrate on projects and achievements. It helped in my job search.
It is not always easy for a novice specialist to highlight his strengths. Therefore, Yandex Practicum has career center, where students and graduates are helped to prepare a resume, taught how to write cover letters and train to pass interviews. In addition, they share vacancies from real companies. You can start studying for free - each course has free introduction, which allows you to try on a new profession and solve the first practical problems. After it, you can continue your studies by paying for the entire program, or change the course if the direction does not suit you.

8. Apply for vacancies while still studying
You can search for them on HeadHunter, Superjob, Geekjob and other popular aggregators. If you want to move to IT, check out Habr Career and vc.ru. In addition, there are many telegram channels. For example, vacancies for marketers, SMM managers, editors are posted in "Work norms» or «We are waiting for a resume». And if there are specific companies in which you want to work, you can write directly there. The main thing is not to be afraid of failures. This is also an experience that will help you grow and develop.

I started looking for a job four months before graduation. At first I received 30 rejections a day, but did not give up. A month later, everything worked out. It is mandatory to apply for vacancies while studying. You will have experience communicating with recruiters and passing interviews. By the end of the course, you will be ahead of other students who are just beginning to probe the market.
