Scientists from the US Geological Survey (USGS) Research Center for Astrogeology have unveiled an incredibly detailed 3D map of Mars.
It was created by superimposing pairs of photos of the same area. Then the images were processed using the Denali supercomputer located in South Dakota (USA). This made it possible to obtain digital volumetric models of the landscape of the Red Planet. It is noted that for a conventional machine, this work would take from 2 to 35 years.
As a result, the map was assembled from more than 4,800 compiled DTMs based on 155,000 photographs from the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter orbital module. Its Context Camera captures images up to 6 meters per pixel, covering an area 30 kilometers wide and 160 kilometers long.
The USGS said that the 3D map of Mars turned out to be of high quality and trustworthy. Scientists have already uploaded the file to cloudwhere anyone can watch it. For the convenience of users, they even released a separate search tool. Data can be opened on all devices, including smartphones.
Such accessibility at the Center was explained by the desire to attract as many enthusiasts from all over the world to the study of the Red Planet.
