How to install a mosquito net on a window correctly
Miscellaneous / / June 09, 2023
There are several options, but after reading our instructions, you can handle any.
What is important to know
The installation process differs depending on the fasteners used, which in turn depends on the type of mosquito net. Rolling and folding systems, due to their complexity and the need for installation by specialists, will be left aside, and in this manual we will consider the fastening of traditional structures on the frame.
To fix the most common internal frame meshes, tendril brackets are most often used, which cling to the window profile from the inside. Quite rare, but still there are still so-called plunger mounts. These are spring-loaded pins on a frame mesh installed in the skylight, which are inserted into holes in window profile.
For external grids that are placed on the outside of the window, Z-shaped fasteners are usually used. They are mounted on the window frame from the outside and form grooves where the mosquito frame is inserted. Another option is hooks-hooks on the frame, which are held by fixing on the inner surface of the window. There may also be swing loops that allow you to open and close the grid.
Next, consider how to install a mosquito net using each of the fastener options.
How to install an internal mosquito net on antenna brackets
One of the most common mounting options and at the same time the most simple and reliable. The grid is mounted easily: without the need to lean out of the window and complex markings. Due to the snug fit to the frame, there are no gaps around the perimeter, in addition, the structure will not even break strong wind.
What you need
- A set of fasteners‑antennae;
- self-tapping screws;
- screwdriver;
- pencil;
- screwdriver is optional.
How to do
Mark the mounting locations of the brackets on the grid frame. To do this, visually determine the middle of the upper and lower profiles and draw strokes there with a pencil. On the side posts, mark the attachment points at a distance of 200–250 mm from the corners.
Attach the bracket in place, insert the self-tapping screw into the hole and carefully screw it in with a screwdriver. Don't over-tighten at the end to prevent the part from turning.
Repeat for all remaining fasteners.
Move the top bar to its working position. Then, holding the handles on the grid, take it outside and insert the top into the frame, and then the bottom.
Carefully, so as not to cut the seal, turn the rest of the antennae for complete fixation mosquitoes. If the brackets do not hold up, slightly tighten the screws with a screwdriver.
To preserve the seal, you can slightly bend the fasteners so that in the closed position they rest against the frame, and not against the rubber band.
How to install an internal mosquito net on plunger mounts
Quite a rare method of fixation. The advantages are that the grid is installed inside the light opening, without going beyond it, and is mounted from the inside of the room. This allows the use of such fastening on windows with bars, where the structure cannot be brought out for installations. And also where, due to insulation, external slopes close the frame and there is not enough space for mounting external brackets.
What you need
- Mounting kit;
- sealant;
- screwdriver;
- drill with a diameter of 3 mm;
- drill with a diameter of 4 mm;
- drill with a diameter of 5 mm;
- roulette;
- pencil;
- hammer.
How to do
At a height of 200 mm from the corner, drill a hole with a diameter of 3 mm through both walls in the end of the frame. Then drill a hole up to 4 mm only from the outside of the profile.
Unscrew the handle from the bracket, insert the thin part with the spring into the larger hole and attach the removed handle to the back.
Install the remaining three fixing parts in the same way. All of them should be at the same height from the edge of the profile. Although this is not so important. Some masters, on the contrary, they mount the upper and lower pins at different heights so as not to get confused which side to insert the mesh.
Glue a seal around the perimeter of the frame. One of the edges should go beyond the profile, and the second one should dock close to it. Make breaks on the fasteners, trying to press against the plungers as much as possible to avoid gaps.
Fit the assembled mesh to the window, pressing the bottom firmly into place, then hit one of the plungers with a small hammer or something similar. Remove the structure and, according to the mark that appears on the frame, make a hole with a 5 mm drill.
In the same way, determine drill hole in the frame on the other side.
Insert the net into place, fixing the bottom fasteners. Alternately mark and then drill holes for the top pins. At the same time, the mosquito does not need to be removed - just move it slightly so that it does not interfere.
If desired, you can additionally install complete metal bushings into the holes in the frame, which will include plungers. But everything works well anyway, so many masters do without it. If you decide to get confused, then drill the holes in the frame to a diameter of 6 mm and hammer the bushings there with a hammer.
How to install an outdoor mosquito net on Z-brackets
The most popular fastener for outdoor meshes, consisting of two pairs of brackets: the frame is inserted into the upper ones and rests on the lower ones. The disadvantage is in a more complex installation, involving the need to lean out of window. It’s also impossible to mount the mesh in this way if, due to insulation, the frame is closed by a slope and there is not enough space for the brackets.
What you need
- Mounting kit;
- screwdriver;
- self-tapping screws;
- roulette;
- pencil.
How to do
Make sure that the width of the top profile on the outside is at least 30 mm. If less, the top brackets can be mounted on the sides. In this case, the sides should be at least 25 mm.
Try on the grid to the window, setting it so as to evenly block the light opening from all sides.
Carefully slide the structure to the side, keeping the indents, and mark the bottom of the mosquito frame on the outside of the frame with a pencil.
Take the lower, shorter bracket and align it so that the mark matches the shelf where the mesh will rest. Fix the part by screwing in the screws with a screwdriver.
At the same height, attach the second bracket with screws. You can measure the distance with a tape measure from the edge of the frame or focus on eye, placing the edges of the fastening in line with the top of the profile.
Put the net on the lower mounts, move it a little to the side and mark the top of the mosquito frame on the frame now.
Attach the bracket with self-tapping screws so that its protruding part is 5–7 mm below the mark. Fix the second fastener at the same height.
Put the mosquito in place. To do this, tilt its bottom away from you and slide the top, then lean the bottom of the frame close to the frame and lower the mesh until it fully enters the mounts.
If there is not enough space on top, attach the top brackets to the sides at a height of 50–100 mm from the top profile. For ease of installation, one of them can be lowered by 20–30 mm. In width, simply align the ends of the fasteners with light opening. Just in case, you can move them 1-2 mm outward so that the structure enters a little more freely.
How to install an outdoor mosquito net on hooks
Reliable and simple fastening method for external structures. Fully safebecause the installation is carried out from the inside. In addition, thanks to the fastening of the brackets to the mesh itself, there is no need to drill the window profile.
What you need
- Hook set;
- self-tapping screws;
- screwdriver;
- roulette;
- pencil or marker.
How to do
Measure the height and width of the light opening, that is, the distance from the top to the bottom seal and between the side seals.
Step back from the bottom of the frame 25 mm and, having marked this point, align the bracket shelf along it, screw it with self-tapping screws. Align the long side of the fastening with the inner edge of the frame.
Install the second hook on the other side in the same way. Check the distance between the outer edges of the fasteners - it should be equal to the width of the light opening.
Measure the height of the light opening from the edge of the bottom hook and attach the top bracket, aligning his shelf on the mark. Fix the part with self-tapping screws and repeat the procedure for the second upper hook.
Install the mosquito net: take it out of the window, and then hook the upper mounts to the frame and lower the structure down to the stop.
How to install an outdoor mosquito net on hinges
A convenient mounting option, which is most often used for balcony doors or windows in private houses. The main advantage is that the grid can be easily opened and closed. Although there are disadvantages: installation is inconvenient to carry out from the inside, and there must be enough space to open the structure.
What you need
- Set of hinges and accessories;
- self-tapping screws;
- screwdriver;
- ruler;
- pencil.
How to do
Using the longer self-tapping screws from the kit, attach the hinge counterparts (without pins) to the mesh frame at a distance of about 200 mm from the top and bottom. In doing so, align the hinges flush with the inside of the mesh profile, which will rest against the window frame.
Again, on the inner side of the grid, approximately in the middle of the side rack of the frame, attach the opening handle with short self-tapping screws.
On the end of the mosquito profile, fasten a part of the latch with a pin with short screws, shifting it from the handle so that it is flush with the frame from the side streets.
Insert the hinge parts with the pins into place. Try on the mosquito to the window from the outside, placing it with the same indents along the light opening, and fix the loops on the frame with long self-tapping screws.
When mounted from the inside rooms will be more difficult. Measure the width and height of the grid frame. Then evenly cover the light opening with it to mark the upper and lower corners of the structure on the window frame. Next, measure the distance from the edges of the frame to the hinges, transfer it to the window, retreating the desired interval from the received marks. Screw on the lower parts of the hinges.
Fasten the mating part of the latch to the window frame. Put it on the pin on the frame, close the mosquito and fasten the outer part of the latch with short self-tapping screws.
To install the latch counterpart from the room, make a mark in the center of the handle, close the mosquito and transfer the dash to the frame. After that, focusing on the icon, secure the latch.
