The feature will work on any PC and most video calling services.
Google is actively developing a new feature DeviceAsWebcam, which will turn your Android 14 smartphone into a webcam of a computer or laptop during a call. The first indication of such a possibility discovered in code back in February, now XDA Developers editor Mishaal Rahman shared parsing the function in your Twitter.
Unlike a similar feature in iOS, the Android solution will rely on a wired connection: the smartphone will have to be connected to the computer via USB.
Judging by what is in the Android 14 test build code, the smartphone will be able to replace the webcam in any application that supports video transfer via USB. In other words, the feature will be compatible with most video calling services. At the same time, you will not need to install additional applications or drivers on your computer: everything will work natively.
At the same time, you still have to install a dedicated application on your smartphone, it will be responsible for transferring data from the camera to the computer. So far, even Pixel smartphones have not received it, but in the future DeviceAsWebcam will receive support smartphones and other manufacturers - provided that their kernel settings allow operation as USB cameras.
It is not yet known whether DeviceAsWebcam will appear on the release of the stable version of Android 14, or it will be added in one of the interim updates.
