Miscellaneous / / May 20, 2023
NASA space agency showed New images of Jupiter's moon Io taken by the Juno probe from a distance of 35,000 kilometers. For the best reproduction of color and lines, the frames were processed by specialists.
Until the end of the year, the spacecraft will only approach the object generously strewn with volcanoes. And only in December it will stop at a distance of about 1,500 kilometers above its surface. For comparison: the Hubble telescope rotates at an altitude of about 534 kilometers above the Earth.
Juno took these pictures on May 16 during its 51st flight around Jupiter. The probe was launched in 2011 as part of a mission to study the gravitational and magnetic fields of the gas giant, as well as to test the hypothesis that the planet has a solid core.
Io is its closest satellite and the most geologically active celestial body in the solar system. It has over 400 active volcanoes.
