Photographer Combines 280,000 Frames to Capture a Giant Image of the Moon
Miscellaneous / / May 11, 2023
You can see craters, mountains, and even cracks in the surface of Earth's nearest neighbor.
American astrophotographer Andrew McCarthy did about 280,000 frames of the moon, then combined them and created a huge interactive image of our satellite. He called his project The Gigamoon (“Gigaluna”).
The enthusiast used two special telescopes, with which he managed to achieve maximum detail, as well as convey colors and shades. Thanks to this, the photo turned out to be of such high quality that you can see craters, canyons, mountains and even cracks on the surface.
McCarthy noted that this is the result of numerous trials and errors - the first attempts were unsuccessful. The most difficult thing was to achieve the same quality of all shots. The project was completed thanks to "the cooperation of the sky," the photographer added, referring to the good weather.
I planned the process for several years. Unfortunately, suitable conditions for filming are usually short-term, so I have a lot of unfinished versions of The Gigamoon on my hard drives.
